I have heard literally nothing about WordPerfect since roughly 1998. I've never even heard it mentioned for years, and even my Dad moved to Word 5+ years ago. Is it really a concern?

This surely!It's also possible that some of the patents will relate to WordPerfect, which is the centre of an ongoing legal battle with Microsoft over anticompetitive practices.
Microsoft have to buy them for protection thanks to the US patent system.
This is also more than just typical MS, this is IBM, Apple (in a very big way lately, just look at the smartphone bizz as they realise this is their only real cash cow), Oracle etc.
