Its fine if you run stock, but if you OC, its not that great, they tend to all top off at a similar level.

Cut the 920/930/940 or whatever is currently the low end and it would raise more eye brows, but it'll spoil the price structure compared to LGA1156/1155

Sorry, I'm probably being dumber than an MP, but does that comment mean that they've got a lot of the market or not?

Being someone who's luxuriating in AMD hexacore goodness (as my sig says), I thought the latter but thought I'd better check. Especially as price cuts of this size either mean you've got a lot of surplus inventory to get rid off before end of the FY, or else you're trying to zip up a market.

Makes me kind of wish that I'd waited - until I realised that the i970 chip itself is about as much as I paid for my Phenom 1090, the ASUS motherboard and a slab of Crucial RAM. A guy can dream though ...

I think for £250-£300 the 970 would be worth considering, but the asking price is still too high for what you get IMO i.e. poor value for money. But then I'm the type of person who thinks the premium you pay for top-of-the-range stuff is a complete waste of money when it makes no difference to current apps and could be had for mainstream prices a few months/a year down the line. Just common sense to me but so many people think otherwise...

At £460, the i7-960 was massively overpriced. You can get an i7-950 for a little over £210. A nearly 100% price increase for a 4.5% performance improvement? Not exactly good value.
The current price reflects what it should cost.
The hex core is still a ripoff and always will. Just like the Q9650. At nearly £260, to costs more than the core i7-960 despite being much slower and cheaper to manufacture than the i7-960.
If it was £150, I'd have probably bought one as an upgrade from my Q6600.
