D-pads are subject to an enormous number of patents - which is why so many different (crap) designs are used rather than just the good ol' Nintendo one.

Someone needs to release a 360 style controller for the PS3, that's the one thing i miss most from switching sides. That and being able to play online.. oh and my details not being stolen.

I hate the d-pad on the original MS 360 controller for fighting games, however I picked up the limited edition one last month with the rotatable d-pad (so it turns into a + rather than the original circular one) and it's a lot better.
