When they claim active account holders and an outdated database, how outdated does it have to be for you to be an active account holder and how much information has been released?

"personal information of 24.6 million active account holders and 12,700 credit card details from an ‘outdated database"

I cancelled a SWG account many moons ago, wonder whether they've destroyed my personal information or whether that's all be jeopardised as well. Shouldn't be a problem as I've cancelled the card that I used long ago but begs the question about account longevity.

Sure the credit / debit card companies will be taking a very long hard look at how much they charge Sony for using their services, given the poor security.

It also begs the question of whether you can really trust any of these large scale online services / gaming portals. Certainly makes me shy away from picking up a new MMO or subscription service if it's so easy for these large companies to loose this volume of information and I can only see this sort of activity increasing.

Re: News - Sony’s online woes continue

I think over time there will be a number of law suits against Sony. Data protection act is very strict in the UK and EU and this kind of leak is going to get alot of lawers perked up and ready to pounce. No doubt Sony will have to cough up and probably cough up behind closed doors to save as much possible PR damage.

But I doubt Sony are the only company that are in such a position regarding old consumer data. Its just come to light because someone smart enough exploited it.
