I don't know.... how about .... allowing iplayer desktop to download radio programs, it produces some things as "pod casts" which are non time limited mp3s of radio shows, however provides none of them to download via iplayer desktop (which is time limited!). This would be so nice with the "series link" button that is now available.

Five year research, so by the time they are due to publish their findings it will be the future. They may as well wait 4 years, 364 days and then quickly throw together a report on what's current at that time... Job done.
The future of audio will be the same as the future of any other data transmission: the exact same as the way we do things today and have done so for a decade, only with dozens of additional buzzwords and repackaged marketing attached.
MP3 was first released in 1993, AAC in 1997, H.264 video started life in 1998.
It takes a while for things to get broad adoption. So 5 years isn't necessarily that long.

Hope you dont mind your TV tax going on research rather than decent shows.
BBC should wait and see what others are doing then pick the best one rather than wasting money. They'd be better of researching life without Moyles, that would save them some money!
The BBC developed the first DVB-T2 implementation. That's hardly a waste of money.
Shame about the cack-handed way it's being rolled out in this country, though.

"others" wait to see what the BBC do before picking that to follow with as they have done the research and have a better idea of the technical implications of that particular process or standard.
What? like they did with Real Audio? how's that coming along now?
That's what I already do - via get_iplayer - let's me catch up on the music and comedy shows that I like. So if the Beeb want a suggestion from a mere pleb then they could always do something like get_iplayer themselves. Or better still, just let the folks currently doing it, do it legally/properly.
I don't think the future of radio is necessarily DAB, much as I personally like it. I'd also argue that there's still a future for normal "scheduled" programs over the radio (FM or DAB), but increasingly audio content should be delivered "on demand" and to as many platforms as possible (preferably using defined standards).
Maybe there's an argument for some kind of "portal" where you could register more than one device (PC, iPod Touch, Android phone, etc) against your TV license number. Once registered on the portal you could then use an app to select your programs (last.fm style?) - effectively generating your own radio station. I'd even be cautiously approving of having links in the app so you could buy the tune you were listening to, (or show recording if available), thereby generating a little more revenue.
I notice though that they managed to get the dreaded "3D" monika in that article. Sigh!.

Ok I am talking about radio 4, not live music channels, they stream the stuff they even provide it as a "pod cast", which has NO drm... why not on iplayer desktop?
Crossy, I know about iplayer, I know i can stream them I know I can download as a pod cast too, I am just talking about iplayer desktop.

Ah right, hadn't picked up on the iPlayer Desktop as a requirement - apologies.
That said, I don't use the Desktop because I use Linux on most of my boxes - so I'll have to ask my eldest kid for a demo. Props on the R4 listening - me too - mainly midday to 1pm on Saturday.
Of course, the Beeb could always just post a few articles here on Hexus and then wait for the forum-feedback...
