That latter comment is probably due to some vendors (Motorola) trying to price match Apple (dumb!), and the poor quality of Honeycomb. E.g. even something basic like the browser is buggy - a check on Android forums will show a slew of folks recommending much better quality alternatives - Dolphin, Opera, and even Firefox Mobile. Thankfully the later patch releases of the OS have been markedly better.Apple, of course, remains the dominant force in tablets. As you can see it accounted for two thirds of all tablets shipped, as the flurry of Android Honeycomb tablets failed to sell in quite the numbers the OEMs would have hoped.
Hopefully, the current Android tablet vendors will realise this, and get Ice-Cream Sandwich on their gear as soon as possible. That's assuming that ICS itself is any good. And no, I still won't buy an iPad - I'm quite happy with my Asus tablet.
