Very sad news . His enthusiasm always made me smile and was a man of good concise career advice.. "love what you do!" . For his family to lose him at just 56 must be painful. RIP Steve.
Love him or loathe him, only a complete moron would attempt to disregard the huge contribution he's made to the technological side of modern life. And not only with the obvious Apple technology products - don't forget that he nurtured Pixar, which has got to be a large reason why CGI kids films are so good today, both from Pixar themselves and other studios like Dreamworks etc.
I may dislike the "Cult Of Apple" that some seem to follow, but I'll heartily agree that the world is made poorer for his passing. R.I.P. SJ
What do people think is his greatest achievement? The iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac (resisted temptation to say "iMac" there), putting a BSD fork (OS X) on so many desktops? Personally speaking, I'd say the iPod - certainly I've been very happy with the two old one's I've still got, and to get "iPod" regarded as the name for a genre the same way people refer to "hoover" for vacuum cleaners is testament in itself.
Certainly not an Apple fanboy here (or, I'd like to point out a Microsoft fanboy either!), but I have to say that Bill Gates' comment was a very interesting one indeed.
While I've never liked any of the iProducts, I won't deny that there has been a great deal of innovation and competition from Apple which has driven the whole technological field forwards, and that would not have been the case without Jobs's Apple. Hats off to the man, and condolences to those who knew him.

It's amazing the effect one (very dedicated) man can have on his field. RIP Steve.
Hopefully Apple will be able to keep his vision going and not revert back to the Apple of the 90's.
Sad he's died, but I've never thought him to be as good as people made him out to be... His products are over priced and over hyped... I think it is like with fashion designers, what they create looks hysterical and is completely impractical and overpriced... but without them the high street shops wouldn't get their ideas... so they serve a valuable purpose...
You the Man Steve
My thoughts go to his family.
I must say I hate apple products with a passion but have to admit the guy was a genius.
We was good on the software/hardware side, but his skill in talking it up and hyping it was something else, you could really see how passionate he was about it.
As much as I have always seen him as the enemy and the leader of the sheeple this is still a very sad day.
Just listening to an old "Linux Outlaws" podcast (recorded at the time he stood down) and one of the hosts was pointing out that SJ wasn't an engineer - instead a consummate businessman who knew how to recognise a good product that others had engineered, and then sell that to people. That's got to be a reasonable summary of his genius.
Interestingly Meg Whitman (HP's new CEO) sent a mail around to all the HP employees about him - so he's definitely left an impression.
