I dont know if I would consider the forcing of the unity UI on people an upgrade!

The UI is good for netbooks and tablets but it just doesnt feel right on my desktop! I really am thinking of changing distro over this!

    It's better than Natty was

But I now no longer have audio from the internal speakers in my laptop, which is infuriating.

How? 11.04 had a mode called 'ubuntu classic' and as far as I am aware this has been removed from 11.10.

Ahh it looks like 'ubuntu classic' mode has been removed but a quick google tells me you can install something called 'GNOME3 classic (fallback) mode'.

I think I'll give this a try and let you guys know how I get on.

Just install gnome-shell or gnome-session-fallback. It was only omitted from the default install set.
