Well, this is surprising... tracking protection on IE9 stops the new look gMail from functioning correctly. If you disable it and then re-enable it, the images come back and stay back.

This is a good refresh for me, as I use an XGA-resolution tablet PC and a 1024x600 netbook. Before, Google struggled to (well, didn't!) fit within the confines of my screens.
Now it does, as the CSS has been tweaked. Try re-sizing your browser window (if you have a large screen to begin with) on GMail and see for yourself.
Well done, Google. Another happy customer. I mean user.
at least contacts work on ie9 now.
