News - Alienware announces X51 console-like gaming desktop

No, it's not the new Xbox 360 or PS4, it's Alienware's latest gaming desktop.

That looks very very nice, and even with a GeForce GT545 inside, it's going to blow away any consoles atm.

Although, if it's set to go head to head with consoles, $699 seems very expensive.

Does it come with a keyboard, mouse, controller or a monitor?

    Found it this morning :

    http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-x51/fs

Just out of interest, went through the whole add to basket thing to see if it can be customised. Literally each variation cant be tweaked, the spec is locked in when you click each tab on the customisation screen. I think essentially what you are getting is one of Alienwares gaming laptops without a screen and put into a small form factor desktop case.

No, these are full PCs without any laptop parts.

There are three performance options to choose from which I think is quite reasonable.
With a SFF case you will always be more limited in configuration.

If it's quiet and you can add a TV card then it would make an excellent HTPC options as well by the looks of it.

Depending on how you use it but it does double up a home PC as well though which most people still buy

The graphics cards are a bit too pathetic imo. Mini-ITX doesn't mean you can't have a decent graphics card. A bit more room in the chassis could've made all the difference.

Chances are they took an apple style approach to this, started with a form factor first. Also have to factor in that an overly powerful card might produce too much heat, be too loud etc.
The power requirements for gpus are pretty absurd at the moment.

I'm disappointed by the weak graphics card; my Silverstone SG06 is only 7% larger by volume but I've got a HD6870 in there.

Re: News - Alienware announces X51 console-like gaming desktop

The worst thing is that there is a low profile HD6750 made by Powercolor:

    http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=18320425

It sounds like a very half arsed effort by Alienware considering the price.

    Edit!!

The GT555 might be not too bad in retrospect:

    http://www.geforce.com/Hardware/GPUs...specifications

The graphics card looks to be half way between a GTX550TI and a GTX460.

This would mean it should be comfortably faster than an HD6770.

Re: News - Alienware announces X51 console-like gaming desktop

I managed to knock my own version up on scan, OS included, for less than £700 that included a 560, 450W SFX PSU and 8GB of RAM.

I have to tip my hat to Alienware though, I'm itching to put together a SFF build now. It's just a shame that none of the SFX could power my GTX 480 Maybe an underclock is on the cards.

Edit: In fact the Silverstone case comes with a 300W PSU so there would be a pretty penny saved off my build.

Edit: 2: I missed the DVD drive off.

Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
