I am thinking I may have to root my S2 to get ICS. Since getting the phone in November, the phone hasn't once been able to connect to the upgrade server.

I'll wait to see what roms come around in the next week or so and see what T-Mobile do with the ICS update as they are notoriously slow as it is.

I've updated the post but it's heading to the UK on the 19th barring any carriers playing pop. Meanwhile you can get an EU release off XDA-Developers but because of the EU carrier branding, Sky Go won't work until you put a UK release back on

Last I heard, there may be no official update for the S due to the fact that the may not be enough memory for ICS plus TW and other bloat to run smoothly. However, I'm sure you'll receive continued unofficial support as there's an ICS build from CyanogenMod.

Unofficially, is it possible to install the OS ... e.g. from xda developers?

Yup CM9 despite being in an early development stage is easily good enough for daily usage on the galaxy s, i've been running it for several months now. Combine it with a deep idle (didle) kernel (like glitch) and you can get several days battery life out of it (I get 4-5 days between charges typically) everything you need is on xda there are lots of builds on there but most tend to go with teamhacksungs.

Been running the AOKP roms on my wifes GS1 for quite some time - theyre fantastic! Very stable, 2-3 days battery life, and in general use feels almost as fast as a GS2. Well worth a look

Nothing here yet either, but I have a SGSII from Phones4U which is not network branded (ie SIM free) so will my update come OTA or is that just for networked handsets ?

I've got an O2 branded phone on a Vodafone SIM, I expect the network you're attached to will push the update if it's available?

If yours is a sim free phone then it should come OTA direct from Google. i.e. earlier than a Network modified rom.

I've got a GalaxyS11 on O2 and heard a rumour that they "MAY" update late April. Anybody heard anything concrete and why do reviewers also review Networks and their piss poor performance in up-dating? If I knew another network was faster in updating I'd definitely go with them.
