Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards. HP is a good company but its size means it takes too much time to change direction when market dictates. Making it more nimble is key to its continuing success. It think Meg Whitman CEO is doing a good job so far.

Ditto - don't forget that there's a deal of duplication with all those companies that have been bought in the last two-three years, so maybe getting rid of the duplication will account for some of those losses. And they've also said that this is not necessarily folks getting P45'd - remember if you get "cut" and then get slotted in to an existing vacancy then that still counts towards the headcount reduction.

I'm speaking from experience because that's exactly what happened to me (twice!) - my job got cut and I ended up filling a vacancy.

Kudos to MW and the current board for insisting that compulsory redundancies are the last resort, and they'll try hard to not go that route if possible. I've got 1000x more respect for her than Mark Hurd.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...
