That seems really stupid to me. If microsoft wanted to fight android then ~£50 a unit extra is going to be a able hard sell. I also think it's going to be hard to compete with the ipad at that price as Apple have unusually not gone for a large mark up. It really is just cost of device plus a sensible profit. How can you compete against the market leader if you cost more? After all most consumers just think tablet = ipad. Really got to wonder what microsoft are thinking...
Just lower the price and put office in the (windows) app store - we'll all buy it anyway.
that is one solution, but I guess that doesn't help as a large percentage WON'T buy Office but use a free alternative...
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Bah, enough people are excited about this that it will still sell at that mark up.
As I understand it, x86 tablets can run full Win8 so all existing software should work but with ARM based Win RT, programs (apps) will have to be written to be compatible with the architecture, meaning all big hitting software won't work on it now (photoshop, games etc etc) in which case yes, it should be cheaper until they've established themselves and a suitable depth of software available. However, a (near) fully featured version of MS Office alone will pull in so many...
if it was $85 without office id say they were silly but im confused as to why this is a bad price? We pay over $100 for the desktop variant and yet this ARM version WITH office (oh how much does that cost? £30 for students £100+ for everyone else?) for way less... MS couldnt let it go for free that would be a disaster its not Open Source so it gains nothing, and office has to be bundled as we all know that probably gets pirated a crap ton (unfortunately), MS want guaranteed sales which is understandable.
£50 is a pretty small sum when you compare the market MS are aiming for, they arent aiming for the £50 - £150 tablet market as its silly and would never happen, MS want to get past this OH ITS WINDOWS, which requires a better hardware standard. The tablets would most likely be Apple prices, probably around £500 which you know isnt much when you add or remove £50, thats still a hefty profit.
But regardless of my views, we shall see how well they do, i hope they do well on the basis that the desktop sector has been neglected really especially by MS and i guess atleast one market can profit/gain from that...
I always thought the 50-150 tablet market is called a Phone.
Everyone I know who has a Lumia 710 (which I bought for £120 off contract, unlocked) is very impressed.
I don't know anyone who has bought a £150 tablet and thought it good.

But Hicks at £500 people will just buy an ipad 2 at £300. Say 'Windows' or 'Office' or 'Microsoft' to guy on the street and he'll go 'meh' - Have you seen how people drool over ipads in the shops. Its that cool factor and the only weapon Microsoft have against that is price and compatibility and with RT they have neither of those. The only thing in Microsoft favour is how hard they can get places like PC World to push Windows tablets to ipad wanting punters but I won't hold my breath.
The ARM based Windows tablets need to compete on cost with the iPad. Convertible tablets might be able to command some of a price premium especially for productivity purposes, but most of the current tablet sales are not of convertible tablets.
Although with Office included this seems like a good deal, it'll probably just make most tablet manufacturers to go with Android. MS are shooting themselves in the foot with this.
Offering Office through the app store would be a much better plan.

Actually there is the Ainol Novo 7 Elf:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=18366622
It has an AllWinner A10 SOC,and a Mali400 GPU. AFAIK,it has an IPS screen and is around £100 to £120.
There is also a dual core version:

Yes I have one of that exact model and its mostly taken over from my ipad TBH.
Someone likes my Novo Elf - I tell them its an Elf, but they can only order from ebay - not the high street,
and if I tell them its an android tablet, they could easily get end up with one of the many crap android offerings.
Tell them to get an ipad, and they'll have no problem getting the exact one - small product line wins.
