I suspect most of their revenue comes from the Far East selling hundreds of things for a few quid.

I have come to dislike using eBay due to wholly excessive fees, but the most annoying thing is that people buying e.g. lenses on there are willing to pay £70+ more for a lens than they would be paying if they frequented a forum such as . Then 90% of that extra goes straight to eBay as fees..

Decision to let companies sell on ebay in the form of outlets is hurting individual sellers. Comapnies list hundreds of items. Individual guy has no chance of selling anything. His item gets lost in the sea of company listings.

Since April, most people have been double stung by increases in fees. Massive increases in both postage fees from CityLink and Royal Mail along with final value fee increases in eBay leaves most sellers screwed

Ebay and Paypal need some better competition, they charge whatever they please for what is essentially quite a simple auction site with pathetic customer service should you need it.

eBid is just rubbish. Custmer service is non-existenet. And once money goes via Google checkout, you are at the seller's mercy if something goes wrong

Amazed that none of the major players have come up with an alternative to Ebay - as lets face it this is a license to print money for them. Even if it was to give Ebay something to think about and lower their fees it would be a start I suppose.

You are probably better selling on a forum/gumtree and accepting a few quid less as it stands because once you factor in paypal and ebay fees you will probably be outta pocket - though having said that you always have the chance a few muppets bid a bit enthusiastically on your item.

I recently tried to order some gear at about 2a.m. in the morning from Scan and decided to use the Paypal option and not sure if it is a new security measure for non-ebay sales but paypal wanted to phone me to make sure I was the owner of the account. I quickly declined as I didn't want a phone call at that time - in fact it ended up costing Scan £300 in sales because when it returned me to their site my basket was empty and I couldn't be arsed filling it back up again ...

Not everyone have the time or interest in forums, and the typically lower number of transactions in forums mean that one may not be able to get what they need when they need it. If I am happy to wait 2-3 months, I am willing to wait and see if the item may appear in the second hand market. If I need it in 2-3 days, I will head to the shop. But if I have 2-3 weeks and the shops are badly overpriced, then I would check Ebay. For some items, it can be *a lot* cheaper anyway.

Yes I have had a business account with paypal for several years now and everything is up to date and been confirmed and used quite frequently. I have in fact ordered quite a few things from Scan using paypal so not sure why they wanted to confirm via a phone call in this instance.

The fact that I didn't want to have a phone ringing at 2a.m. on a Monday morning has unfortunately cost Scan 300 smackers ...

Since the 10% hike in fees I avoid eBay at all costs, 5% was just about acceptable but 10% is just disgusting. Google are the only ones with the size and power to create an alternative but they don't seem keen. I would be happy if eBay just rotted, it isn't how you treat customers.

With paypal payments, we are reliant on third parties servers all functioning correctly in a timely manner. As you can imagine, there are pockets of time where the servers might not be functioning as intended due to their load from places like ebay and sometimes payments do not get authorised.

I've also noticed a pattern with a certain cheap ISP, but that's for another thread
