If I can snag a decent brand 7870 for sub £180 I'm all over it

    £145 7850 (currently waiting ETA) - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-xfx-radeon-hd-7850-core-edition-4800mhz-gddr5-gpu-860mhz-1-x-dual-link-dvi-i-2-x-mini-display

I still can't decide whether to go for this one or just splash out the the 7950 though...

Well, this puts a £100 pound gap into the Radeon line up 7950-7970...Hopefully this will close

I was originally going for a 660Ti - then it came out at £250. So instead I think I shall save myself £100 and get an AMD 7850 instead to replace my 9600GT. The first time since 3DFX days I will not have a GeForce Card in my system. End of an Era I'm afraid.

A bit better on the price front - but still a big enough chunk of a price difference.

Currently I'm running 1440 x 900 and eventually will go to 1080p so when I think about it I reason that the 7850 will more than meet my needs.

The GTX660 non-TI might be worth waiting for,as it will be under £200 and seems to be underclocked somewhat. By that time hopefully HD7870 cards will be well under £200 too.

The GTX660TI is a meh card IMHO at £240 to £250. The GTX670 is worth the extra dosh in the long run and the HD7950 is better if you overclock(40% to 50% overclocks are not unheard off,and 30% should not be that hard).

    Edit!!

Here is an average performance comparison of the competing cards done by a German website.

Over 10 reviews from websites like Anandtech and Toms Hardware were used for thr 1920X1080 results.

Compared to this non-reference 7950 + 3 free games http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-054-HS, that's still pretty awful. These need to be at least £30 less tbh.

I believe totally that these sites are using 3Dmark11 and the 2 or maybe 3 games that favor Nvidia cards.

I have owned them all and I owned the GTX680 before I ever bought the 7970 and I can tell you that the 7970 creams the 680 in every benchmark with the exception of 3Dmark11!
And I mean beats the snot out of it in every other benchmarks.

This is the first AMD card I actually have had in my system in 5 years. I have owned all sorts of cards from both Nvidia and AMD. But in my personal system I usually go with Nvidia.
    Except this time.
I have the benchmark and in every benchmark test AMD wins hands down.

    Talk about overclocking?

I noticed a hair of gain while overclocking the GTX 680 and it got really hot.

The 7970 at Idle doesnt even get warm to the touch. And when I overclocked the 7970 is scaled incredibly well and stayed cool.

I was totally impressed with the AMD card for a game called Tribes Ascend. The GTX680 felt like it was stopping me from moving well.

The AMD was way smoother for that game. And as I said every benchmark with the exception of Marks11

Agreed. Just pointing out they can be had for less than £250.

It seems the OEM GTX660 non-TI has 1152 shaders running at around 800MHZ,although rumours say retail cards will have 960 shaders.

If it is the former for retail cards too,the GTX660 non-TI might be a decent card for overclocking!!

£240 7950 over the cheap and nasty 660 with its nasty cheap 192 bit bus holding it back with high AA use and games that like high memory bandwidth, £250 card my ***. 7950 blows the 660 away in specs and clocks way past 7970 performance, the 660 TI is dead on the shelves at its current price in the UK. AMD are doing good.
