I've been using Messenger for years with my girlfriend and though it's a pretty shoddy piece of software it is still fairly reliable. We tried skype last night on her new laptop and either it just can't cope with it or skype is taking too many resources - it is clearly superior in terms of both audio and video quality but that's no good if people's hardware can't deal with it. I strongly suspect the average 2 MB internet connection in the UK will also struggle.
What a shame. The once light and simple communication program is now to be replaced by the bloated rubbish (since Microsoft got involved) that is Skype....
Microsoft really are in the habit of pushing people away at the moment...
Linux or Chrome OS is calling...
Well I have loaded Skype on my windows 8 laptop and I do not like it, not sure if I will be looking for another messaging service but I did like windows live messenger.
I‘ve been using Messenger for years, but these days I prefer to use Skype, and only keep messenger running in the background to notify me of new hotmail messages arriving. So the only thing that worries me about this news, is that Skype currently doesn’t have the feature of a direct link to your hotmail account with instant email notifications. I run a home business, and have my website mail and gmail redirected to hotmail, so its always been nice to receive instant notifications from all the accounts in one place, rather than having to log into the various accounts each time. Messenger now feels really outdated, and I am sure once people give Skype a try, they will get used to it, and eventually prefer it. I tried Skype so many times in the past and hated it, usually uninstalling it after a few days, because of security issues, or it not playing nicely with other application, or that most people didn’t use it at the time, but the latest version seems to run without any issues, and now all my friends and clients have switched over to Skype, and I rarely see anyone online on messenger anymore. If Microsoft really are scrapping messenger, then I hope that hotmail is integrated before the axe falls.
I have logged in and it lost all my contact groups, no tabbed messaging windows and it seems to have added everyone i have deleted as well, This is not ready for use as msn/wlm and the 1Q of 2013 is dreamland why not port over the nice quality of audio, video and desktop sharing of skype into msn/wlm cause this just feels oh so wrong
Shrug/Meh
It's just a method of sending strings from one place to another, there are rather a lot of those about it's not like it will be a major hassle for people who still use Live Messenger to change. Good of Microsoft to keep it simple and roll it all together IMHO... it's a shame Skype is harder to integrate with the open source clients, although if they keep the old MSN/Live protocol and servers going it would at least mean an easy protocol in common with the Skype client.
have not used messenger in years, got to much hassle using it and spam from people trying to add me...so not going to miss it
Still use it to talk to quite a few people, can use decent third-party interfaces for it unlike Skype's horrid bloatware, but I'll probably move to XMPP instead, something I've been wanting to do for ages but at least this gives other people a reason to do so now.
No one I know has used it in yeeeears. It's of no consequence to me.
Skype is bloated as hell though. Seriously, i JUST fired it up, and it's using over 100MB of memory. Ridiculous.
Microsoft Messenger, those were the days. Had fun with it for sure

I still have it set to load at start up, only use it to speak to a few people anymore and it's not often. Just like SRPlus, the main thing i use it for is alerting me of new emails. Did the job fine so never needed to look elsewhere. Time to google some software it seems.
I used them all over time, started on ICQ, then MSN, Yahoo, AIM, but ultimately gave up on all because of the advertising, and all the additional crap they included that wasn't necessary.
Started using Skype years ago, because it was free and no adverts and I could add credits to call international numbers cheap. Since MS got hold of it they are trying to monetize it and they are making it worse. At this rate I will give up IM altogether.
Tried Skype but it is not for us we need something that is small and simple so we are trying Google Chat, and it is ok so Microsoft has lost a few folks here, we do not need fancy programs its the simple things in life we enjoy.

Forced "Upgrades" you say..? ha.. we'll see about that

And because some of you guys mentioned ICQ.. at least that's still alive and supported.
Even my very first account (registered at age 14) is still there and works just fine.
Messenger patchers to get rid of all the ads and other junk are just as old as the messengers themselves (esp. for ICQ and MSN/WL). They've always been pretty much the first thing I've used after installing the messenger in question itself (before even logging in).
And if you don't actually need the original client for one of its (mostly useless) extra features, there are still universal/multi messengers like Miranda IM or Pidgin..
