If they get an improved stepping out, could be amazing

Does Vishera use RCM? I thought that was the case originally but have heard since it's only used on Trinity?

    Still, impressive OC either way!

Re: News - New World Record close with AMD "Vishera" CPU at 8.67GHz

I've always found the maximum frequency record a bit silly, the overclock is rarely that stable and requires such silly measures to achieve it. It's like having a racing car that you've attached so much turbo to that you get to 400mph but just go flying off the track at the first corner.

Now the maximum performance attained in real world usage scenarios - that's a useful record, pushing the boundaries on encodeing or raytracing. Rather more like setting the lap record at Nurburgring.

It's achieved using somewhat impractical cooling and with cores disabled, it's not intended to be a real-world OC/benchmark.

I see them as a kind of proof-of-concept, thrashing hardware to it's limits has been going on forever, but it's definitely for a select few. It might also be used to find limitations and improve the design later on, but clearly, mainly willy waving.

Don't get me wrong willy waving a proof of concept is all well and good... but personally I find it far more impressive if the result is actually useful for something, like creating super-charged rendering machines etc.

Wiily waver 1: "Dude, I made this super super clocked PC"

Wiily waver 2: "Oh cool, what can you do on it?"

Wiily waver 1: "Errr it stays up just long enough to get a screengrab from CPU-Z"

Wiily waver 2: "Oh right OK, yeah I'm about 1GHz behind from that but I smashed up all the benchmarks and now I can rebuild my code project, turn out my animated short films and all the weird stuff iTunes makes me do on my photos in about 70% of the time before I started over-clocking, it's saving me hours of waiting and now I'm 25% more profitable at work."

    Wiily waver 1: "Oh."

Re: News - New World Record close with AMD "Vishera" CPU at 8.67GHz

Again, the overclockers don't even remotely claim this is for anything useful; stability goes out the window, it's difficult and costly to cool, cores are disabled, efficiency drops massively, and heavy load is likely to crash the system.

You sacrifice the above to some extent with all overclocks; even with reasonable air-cooled clocks (i.e. often a small, unnoticeable gain) you're risking stability and efficiency with any CPUs which is partly why server CPUs run at such low clocks.

No need to get all emotional about it.

TBH, most world records have no practical purpose, people just do it because they can/for fun!

Well, guess I'm the animating willy waver 2 then

I don't care for beating any records, but as you say, I do like getting things done faster with minimal effort - OC, stress test, never touch it again. Better bang for buck I suppose.
I'm still glad these guys are around to do these speedruns though, so I don't have to

    Yep totes emosh

Yeah I know, everyone has their own fun and it's cool (no pun intened)... but as said there is a willy-waving aspect and I just think you can do more waving if you can run something useful on it that's all. A Perseus missile is impressive but a plane that travels at close to that speed, lands and does it all over again with passengers on board is better :-)
