Well you can't expect kids to have a sense of what's right and wrong until they grow up

I'm not currently a parent (so perhaps this is easy for me to say as I don't get nagged!), but when I am I have no intention of buying my 6-12yr old a tablet or smartphone of any kind for their own use.

Am I in a minority here?

Re: News - Kids are looking forward to an Apple flavoured Xmas

I bought a Dyson Hoover the other day. Did you see what I did there? A phone is an iphone, a tablet is an ipad, MP3 player is an ipod to children. They often use the generic name such as Hoover to describe the product even though the manufacturer is different.

Kids may also want an ipad but that doesn't mean a parent is going to fork out £400 on one for their 6 year old just because the 6 year old has heard other people talking about an ipad.

I'm happy with 6% of the US kids.

By the time you are a parent and your kid hits 6 years old (so at the earliest 6 years) You will have no choice. Kids use computers at school, they will no doubt be using touch pad devices in 6 years times.

My 5 year old is more interested in using our Android tablet for games than the Xbox360 we have or his computer. And this may sound sad but he's been using a computer since 2 and a tablet since 4.... He ain't no computer nerd of genius, its just the way the world is moving....

I love watching him learn new stuff. Like the new car stereo, he couldn't understand why a device with a big screen had buttons to control it...

No idea what a audio tape or VHS tape is.

Makes sense. The ipad is a kid's toy after all.

I wonder what percentage of that are hoping for a mini.

Interested to see what the relative market share of that is vs. the regular ipad in a year or so. Some reviews seems to think the 7 inch form factor is the future, yet to try one personally.

I've not really got a problem with my (potential future) 6 year old using such a (family) device under supervision, but no way I'm letting them run around with their own £400 piece of kit. I have a hard enough time trying to avoid my wife destroying my Kindle!

My kids get an apple every christmas, and if they've been good - an orange too.

I would have my kids learning about computers, the internet and everything from as early as they could absorb it, a career in IT has been very good for me and I can only see it increasing in importance as we rely more and more on our technology - so many careers now involve significant IT elements, even it is just a passive understanding and use rather than active development of new systems.

I would ensure my young children had a "curated" experience though, actually kids I might give an Apple device to precisely because of the "walled garden" approach and I would seek to control what they could see on the internet as far as possible. IMHO older children should be taught about the dangers of the internet, you can't keep them protected forever so they need to learn to protect themselves and the best defence is knowledge even if it is an unpleasant topic (i.e. paedophiles).

I remember when a Gameboy was top of my wishlist, so not much has changed!

An age bracket of 13+ is about as pointless as you can get. Maybe if they could even break it down into ages of "want to spend someone else's money on it" vs "want to spend my own hard-earned money on it" it'd be useful.
