Could be the killer catalyst Google need to foist G+ on people...
It makes sense, it's probably (?) the most widely-used cross-platform messaging app, but once Google own it, would Apple let it on their phones?
Is Google talk available on iOS?
I must be blind or stupid but I never get the appeal of whatsApp, I have email gtalk skype and even facebook(please die...soon),what does it do better than these? I get its meant to be a replacement for SMS and I assume its main success is the tablet market via wifi but I struggle to find anyone that uses it.
Scratch that it seems I just need friends....
Dont buy it for $1 billion though that seems like a complete waste of cash simply because its not worth that much as the app actually is free, they would need to have the service for 100 years to break even if they had 10 million yearly users, I cant find actual data on how many users they have but just going by the android side of it they have 2.8 million downloads which means they have at most that many android users (alot of people probably dont even use it). They seem way off breaking even and that is without taking into account the running costs!.

But think of the user backlash. Apple couldn't get away with blocking a known liked app, to replace it with a bucket of steaming poo that doesn't even have kings cross in the right place....

18 billion makes for a lot of data.
You have to remember with these google products, just like face book, you are the product to be sold to others.
Frankly right now, I'm really glad we have facebook not being owned by google, I also hope FireFox OS or Ubuntu gains traction away from Android. A company that exists based on selling things accurately because they have modelled them so invasively, I do not like being the monopoly!

I use whatsapp and yeah, its nothing fancy, but its nice having an alternative to SMS that other people actually use. Sure we have facebook but they have a tendency to royally mess up the app with every other major iteration. It still has this stupid bug/feature where it will send you all the messages you have already replied to on another platform as soon as the device gets internet. Drives me nuts!
The skype app is garbage on phones, really really power hungry and ugly, i only switch that on if i need it (and it also has a similar bug/feature to facebook)
I have never quite got on with any of googles chat clients, they always seem to be just not quite good enough.
Whatsapp could do with a better accounts system, still base messages on phone numbers but being able to access, send and receive on a laptop would be nice.
I like Whatsapp. I like Google services. Seems like a decent fit to me.
Essentially people I know (and me for that matter) were sold on Whatsapp as a cross platform alternative to BBM.
They could see the attraction of BBM, but weren't willing to move to having a blackberry, and thus Whatsapp filled the hole. Also it fit quite well with a generation that (mis)spent their youth on MSN Messenger.
I also agree that this area was perfect for Facebook but they have royally screwed up. Facebook messenger is a disaster, and why it cant detect when you have already seen a message on another platform is a mystery to me.
