Wow what a backtrack...

Well, it does address what most of the users hate about windows 8... will it be enough? we will see...

Indeed, this is no real change at all.
But hey if this is all it takes to placate people it just goes to show how trivial their concerns were in the first place.
An actual Icon and boot to desktop? Oh wait I already have that thanks to classic shell...
And I bet the first thing you do when you boot to desktop is click start (or otherwise launch a program).
for me it's launch a couple of programs - when I mean backtrack I mean they were saying they wouldn't revert back to a start menu but this is a close as they can do it without actually doing it, surely?

Honestly no, its not enough to placate those who use start menu replacement software, the reason we use it, is because WE DONT LIKE THE START SCREEN.. adding in a button that takes us to the start screen, is just another kick in the teeth..
Not Impressed.
Quoth the server... "404"
Now all I need from "Metro" screen is an office button rather than scrabbling around in charms bar
"Boot to desktop, click start, and then type enough to get the progs up that I want" would be my preferred mode of use. Clean, quick and flexible - no need to play "hunt the tile" with MUI. Assuming of course, that your preferred app IS compatible with MUI, and I've come across quite a few apps that aren't available as tiles. In which case you end up perusing a list of programs just as you would with the "old, nasty" UI!
While I'm dissing MUI, am I the only one to spot that the lack of taskbar icons can be a problem if you're relying on those to give information, e.g. whether your VPN is connected?
How can a program NOT be compatible with a tile? A tile is just a button by another name.
Are there also some programs that aren't compatible with the start menu?
You know you can move the tiles around and group them to make finding programs really easy?
I just want more customisation & flexibility out of windows 8 start screen so I can get it to look like something I would actually want to use. It just seems ugly and inflexible to me hence the reason I continue to ignore it. It's not that relevant to older hardware and software anyway.
For me the worst aspect of windows 8 is the MS app store. I'd rather have my software direct from the developer without the 30% MS tax added.
I didn't expect Microsoft to bring back the classic Start Menu and I figured the Start Button would open the Modern UI. Still, it's something.

Pretty much got used to stock Windows 8, the "start button" was "always there" anyway, just invisible until you mouse over. To me, it'll mean nothing but as others have said, to the general public, it may mean people will take up Windows 8 again. I mean although people hate the "start/metro screen", how often were you looking at the desktop whilst you had the start menu open anyway?
One thing that will be useful would be to boot straight to desktop. Usually I just press enter at the "start/metro screen" so it'll save me a keyboard press I guess. Nowadays I just put my PC to sleep though so then again, it doesn't make too much difference unless I cold boot my PC.
