It kinda reminds me of the game Freelancer
What? Homeworld? They're both set in space between ships fighting. The similarity ends about there. I'm still playing Homeworld occasionally, especially at LAN events - it's a true classic up there with Half Life and Deus Ex for PC gamers.
There's some really in-depth mods for it which substantially add to the complexity of the game - HW2 Complex and HW2 Tactical Fleet Simulator are both great. Currently playing Star Trek Continuum which offers a very easy to play Star Trek total conversation, vastly reducing the tech tree and making it very easy to pick up after a couple of games.

I like Homeworld.
Check out the comment from PatrickSwayze on the RPS coverage of this story, you can kind of see/imagine it happening. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/22/and-homeworld-went-to-gearbox/#comment-page-1
Great... another franchise for Gearbox to mutilate and destroy!.
Maybe I am wrong but in my experience Gearbox has no skill in doing justice to any game they did not create/envision. Duke nukem wasn't great at all and should have been so much better, couldnt expect a game changing release but it should have been a bit more than an average shooter! Aliens colonial marines, looked epic they had plenty of time to develop the game (pushed launch back a fair bit!) and they even demoed the alpha version which has great lighting effects and in general pretty nice graphics then they released a game totally different so they falsified a game lol! As soon as it was released the main guy at gearbox just stopped talking about it, all he talks about is bl2 which is good but it hasnt really come far from bl which was already a good game!.
Useless company should stick to just developing their own IP...
I hope they don't make as much a mess of this classic as they did with Colonial Marines...
I'm just hopeful they update HW2 to a more current level, I loved all 3 of the HW franchise, though if they balls it up there will be a special place in hell for them lol, just rerelease HW2 as it is only updated to take advantage of todays rigs, I still have all the HW games, I may dust them off now for nostalgia though I will have to go hunting for the updates that exist...
R.I.P Homeworld
Ground breaking for it's time and some of the best single player RTS campaigns ever seen. Now destined to be mutilated by Gearbox.
Anyone know any graphics mods for the first two? This news has made me dig mine out to play. Can't find anything decent myself.
If they redo Homeworld and release it for a reasonable price then I'd love to play them, and if there is a Homeworld 3 it hopefully sounds like they will treat it with the respect it deserves.
In my opinion, Stardock would have been a much better result for Homeworld fans. Sins of a Solar Empire is a really polished game that I have put many hours into. Being a Homeworld fan, this is significant as after playing the perfection that is Homeworld, it is difficult to attach yourself to any other space RTS! I do fear what will happen to Homeworld under Gearbox. Their early games were pretty good (Half-Life related, Halo related etc) but their recent track record does not fill me with hope!
Another game's legacy to be desecrated, Gearbox just can't be trusted to make a decent game.
Well first thing I want them to do is bring HW1, HW:C, HW2 to steam so can have shiny digital copies
They come from the dark and slice your head off
