hole, digging.
Have to agree - this is going to be a mighty expensive failure!
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Although, if they do it right and make it cheap enough, it could be the mass-appeal device they should have released in place of the RT the first time.
In fairness my company is looking at the 2nd generation as an alternative to Apple and Android tablets because of presumably better integration with Office etc.
Tegra failed to get on many flagship Android devices this time around, so they have to dump their chips elsewhere.
@Tpyo, while price may have been the problem with Surface RT, I think the bigger problem was Windows RT. More people want full fat Windows 8 or one of the more mature offerings in the form if iOS or Android.
I've got currently in the tablets range
- Nexus 7
- iPad 2
- iPad 4
- Lenovo thing (generic cheap andriod) * 2
- Surface RT
By far and away my favourite for use is the Surface RT.
The problem is, it is hard to understand why to buy it, what the difference between the Pro is, what can and can't run on it.
The Nexus 7 is brilliant because for the money it's a quality device, that fits in a coat pocket or a smaller manbag.
But the Surface RT is absolutely brilliant. Want to edit a PDF? No problem. Want to then print direct to any printer in any office you happen to be? No problem. Want to plug in a headset for Skype that's USB? No problem. Want to transfer files from a digital camera to a portable HDD? No problem. Want to play Angry Birds no problem. Want to browse a website that uses flash, no problem. Want to browse a website that isn't touch friendly, no problem. Want to watch Netflix whilst chatting on Skype, no problem!
None of my other tablets can do all of these things out of the box and with ease.
The downside is missing software and lack of 4G. For example the Lenovo thing I use entirely for SkyDemon. I have two, one as a backup. It runs the software slowly, but well enough, it also has dual sim cards so I have a better chance of getting live weather updates etc.
The problem the Surface RT faces is that it needs 8.1 to be remotely user friendly, and it still isn't there. The settings are often split between MUI and Desktop. But mostly, people don't realise it can actually do the things. They have become used to Apple's very, very limited offerings. If that is all you want a tablet for, it's a no brainer to buy the iPad the software offering is un-surpassed for fart apps and casual games. It is amazing despite their advertising, I blew someones mind on the train the other day because I had a split screen text chat / email going on whilst watching a video, straight from a USB HDD.... They couldn't believe you could do that. MS have failed badly showing why their product is differen't, and why you'd want it.
Dyson didn't compete with Hoover by having stupid advert showing people dancing. They show simply that it is easier to use (manover on a ball or whatever) and go on about it's loss of suction. Otherwise, if you are to compete with the market dominator (ie Apple) you have to go cheaper (ie Andriod).

This.
When people buy windows they think of compatability, the simplicity to surf and download from an almighty number of programs that all just work on windows. If you want something more closed and interlinked a lot of people buy apple to join the 'apple bubble' with less (but ever growing) options but greater integration between devices and specialist needs.
Surface RT just doesn't do any of this. It is not what people buy windows for because its based for mobile applications but nor is it a good mobile platform. It's built to compete with mobile OS's but to finish it off has such limited ability with its lack of programs and developer support in comparison.
I haven't seen one advert as to why we apparently need RT over normal windows - its just advertised as windows 8 so do they even know what its for? It's just windows mobile for tablets but with nice looking office and a grand desktop pc like theme over the top. They could have done this with a nice office app for any tablet.
They need to ditch this idea. They're trying to create an independant tablet OS on one principle - a more spacious mobile windows feeling. I just don't see it working.
At <£300 with keyboard attachment a 10" Windows RT Surface can make sense, and/or a 7" around the same price as a Nexus 7.
There are more basic features and better peripheral compatibility than Android or iOS, only lacking on the apps front. But once you start to climb in price and compete against full x86 Atom powered tablets RT makes absolutely zero sense to me, I'd rather have the full 100% compatibility of full fat Windows. ARM and Atom are similar speed and power usage these days.
If Surface RT 2 is similarly way more expensive than a Nexus and around iPad price it has no chance against the cheaper or more established players, just like the first version.

Aside from the Netflix with Skype thing, the Nexus 7 can do all of that. Granted you need a mod and an OTG adapter to use the USB headset, but that's not exactly the most difficult or expensive thing in the world. I know you were commenting on out-of-the-box features, but I like picking on things. Oh well.
