This would be a winner for me, I like the 3DS games, just don't care much for the 3D effect and don't really take a handheld anywhere with me when I'm out, I'd rather just listen to music.

It WOULD be a winner if it wasn't for that awful control layout! Why did they shift everything upwards instead of keeping the same positions down by the lower screen?

It looks like a good device, I enjoyed my Nintendo DSi XL and didn't make much use of it's folded size.

I suspect that is because of the design, having the weight at the top makes it more difficult to hold steadily at the bottom so the compromise is to hold it in the middle.

Re: News - Nintendo surprises with 2DS handheld console, £109 in UK

The Nintendo 2DS will be available from 12th October in the US and the UK, that's the same date as Pokemon X and Y are released. US pricing has been set at a recommended $129.99. Meanwhile in the UK GAME are accepting pre-orders of the console for £109.99. Initially the console will be available in black & blue or white & red colour combinations.
I think I must be missing something here - the "full fat" 3DS is only £25 more (checked at Game) and that's surely got the advantages of stereo speakers, easier pocketability plus the 3D there if you change your mind and fancy a go. If I was in the market for a game console (which despite owning a DSi and DSi XL) then I'd pay the extra - although these days tablet gaming is more appealing to me personally.

I really dislike the 'slab' design, I preferred it as two folding parts, but a good concept, I for one am unable to use 3D settings on such devices for health purposes so this could appeal

And a PSVita is another £20 (£147) on top of that... I guess options are never bad! Still love my £99 second hand vita. First hand held console i've owned that i've really used.

Yeah you can turn the 3d off on the 3ds and still have the compact design for £20 more. Nintendo are mental pricing this over £100.

Surely in that case, it makes more sense just getting one of the many previous DS models that have been out for years?

Not a bad idea but I wish they would bring out a refresh version of the game boy advanced sp so we can play gameboy and gameboy advanced games on it.

Re: News - Nintendo surprises with 2DS handheld console, £109 in UK

I don't find DSs that pocket-able in the first place so if they managed to decrease the overall volume of the device without compromising the battery life then I could see the appeal for some. Personally, I am more interested in the XL, but the region locking seems (based on the fact that I've still not bought one) to be a deal-breaker to me. Given that the Wii U is also region locked, I am guessing that the 2DS will be too, which makes it a "NG" in my book.

Was reading about this before. I personally think its very ugly and reminds me of those 80s/90s single game handhelds.

The reason its not clamshell is they have used a single large screen with a bezel to separate it into 2 screens, saving money, but I have no idea why anyone wouldn't pay the extra £15-20 for a full 3DS.

The lack of a hinge is a good thing for parents as the hinge is a weak point and doesn't hold up well to the treatment that some children subject it to. With the lack of 3D it looks like this addresses some of the main concerns when giving none of these to a child. Now if only they had gorilla glass on the screens - if a child loses the stylus they tend to grab the closest thing to hand - instant scratched screen!

This is really priced too high to be attractive. Managed to see a 3ds for £80 if you managed to get one instore, although granted that it was a special offer. The rrp of the 3ds and 3ds xl are too high too when the vita is priced similar to the xl yet is massively better on the hardware front. Having said that, I recently went with a 3ds xl with mario kart 7 for £150, gutted that I missed it by a day at £125 with a different game a while ago but this will probably be as good as I'm gonna get.
