I can run battlefield 3 on ultra at 1920x1080 at a staggering average of 16fps. Max 22fps, min 0fps. I could do with a steam box, at least i5 and gtx 760...

The way I see it, it puts more focus back on PC gaming where it should be, doesn't matter how or what you do it on if it's still a PC.

What are you talking about? There are tons of pre built windows pcs that you can buy from "custom" pc builders right this very second... the people who want to build their own... do. Valve is attempting to open the market up to an open source linux gaming experience... and they are awesome for giving it a shot.

I agree entirely, I'm planning on buying a configured PC from PC-Specialist, I've always thought the Steam Machines were aimed at casual gamers for living rooms, people will always prefer building their own or buying pre built for gaming scenarios.

Loved the end statement, I can build my own, just don't have the time to invest, in case the PC 1337 builder is interested in why I'm paying for someone else to build.

Great, because I was about to hurl insults at you for not DIYing.

I doubt steam will sell the Steam Box at as much of a markup as other manufacturers, either. It'll be cheaper than a similarly speced alienware, for example (provided we're only talking about the GTX 660 version, as alienware don't sell powerful systems, just weak ones for the prices of powerful systems). A casual PC gamer is going to be getting the option of a powerful PC from a company that even writes games. Valve aren't going to cheap out on hardware when they know poor framerates will make their own games look poorly made (this is assuming Valve swap source for something not-max-outable on a 660).

Prefab computers have been around for generations. This isn't going to do anything to the PC building experience, aside from give us a new OS and controller to play around with. A DIY build will still always be cheaper because the 'overpricing' you refer to is the labour cost for building it, so people don't have to build them at home (some people don't have the knowledge or time for it). This is simply an addition to the gaming machines we already have, with all the advantages of a PC but the easy, laid-back attitude of a console. The only obvious disadvantage I can see is that with such a small case, you'll encounter temperature issues if you OC, but with the higher-end models, they're gonna be kicking arse over the XBone, PS4, and a great many PCs anyway, so why would you even need to?
