From a practical point of view, when the phone gets put in pocket, the screen is going to be pointing outwards instead of inwards and against the leg... (due to the curve) Surely this makes the screen vulerable when you rest the device in pocket.
When i put my current phone in my pocket i put the screen towards my leg, as a vain attempt to protect the screen from knocks etc.
hmmm, a vertically concave smartphone would actually mould round the side of the face much like an old-fashioned phone used to. I can still see it being awkward to carry in a pocket though - it's going to stick out as a lump when the curve is vertical (whereas a horizontal curve would nestle in to your leg). Either that or you'd have to put it in your pocket sideways-on, which isn't going to be very practical for a 6" device...
I don't see this application of this technology that useful - but
If the screen folded, then imagine having a small 4" screen smart phone that folded out to a 8" or 16" screen..
