Re: News - WinAmp media player's llama whipping days are over

I still use WinAmp for music playback today. I love the minimalist GUI and it's tiny resource demands, it does everything I want from a music player - play music, no BS.

I shall be squirrelling away multiple versions of the downloaded executable for future use.

Its a shame. I did use this a lot a few years ago but with Zune not working on 8.1, i needed something to keep track of my music library and while winamp does have a library function, its nowhere near the itunes and zune setup.

Re: News - WinAmp media player's llama whipping days are over

I'm still using v2.80, and why not - it plays ogg, wma, mp3, mp4 m4a, (via plugins), using 8.5Mb of system memory, has handy right click menu options and a small minimum interface with easy access equaliser, still not found anything better to be honest. As such i've not needed them to update it in what, 10 years? Doubt that's going to change now!

I use it to rip my CD's to FLAC for storage on my QNAP Nas. I guess I'll get the latest version and once it stops working with whatever Windows OS I'm on I'll move to Foobar2000 or something like that.

    Used here and there.
Has quite a powerful dsp and plugin chain.

Quite a lot of people switched to foobar for that sort of thing, though

Did you have it installed pre upgrade? If you did, it works fine. Trying to install it on 8.1 directly fails.

I still use winamp, I haven't ever looked at using a different player for music. I'm astonished that it's being canned.

Still using it right now. Classic skin, minimised in a row, always on top and sat at the top of my screen.

Surely someone would pay something for the name and relaunch it?

Ah ok. I assume using the installer in compatibility mode doesn't work then? Stupid MS.

Re: News - WinAmp media player's llama whipping days are over

Still using Winamp on PC and mobile.

Yes my phone has a built in palyer but its crap and a resource hog. Battery performance seems a lot better than the default installed one too!

I will be putting away a copy of the installer for my PC but how do I go about rescueing it for future installs on my mobile? Am due to change handset at the end of the year and dont want to lose it.

Tried Foobar but didnt like that the back button doesnt work when you are listening to a playlist with shuffle on which seems totally crazy so went back to Winamp.

    RIP

If only they'd open source it... I know there are already plenty of open source media players, but it's a shame to let something with the history of Winamp just die.

This is what i was thinking. Why can something like that instead of just releasing it to the public open source and let it keep going... very strange.
