Great idea, I use Ableton and would love to make my own controller. Only problem is, as usual, the price. A launchpad S is currently £149 and does so much more...
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
I'm going to get some knobs and sliders and attach them to the top of my keyboard, I'd just have to pretend they were connected to something.

I know much of this must be research and software plugins/hooks, but $99 for a button, a knob and a slider is too much to get this off the ground. They need a cheaper way to hook people into the system and make the project last.

Are the knobs infinite spinning digital steppers, or are they true end-to-end potentiometers? I would love to see a real potentiometer input on my PC, as a volume control. I hate having to repeatedly press "vol down" over and over again. I need a knob.
A few keyboards like the microsoft X6 do have a knob for volume, but they're still infinite spinning ones. Worst still for some reason keyboard volume controls on my PC always have a weird sort of lag, sometimes it takes about 5 seconds after first twiddling the knob until the volume on the PC changes.
You're mostly paying for the debts they've probably built up during their holiday in China.
If that guy REALLY wants to boost productivity then he should perhaps sit at a proper desk, on a proper computer in a proper office instead of lugging around a laptop and 5 massive buttons...
Cover it in tweed, change the knobs for chickenheads and mark them 0-12, you'd have a thing of beauty.
@zen1966: Thanks for today's first hearty Lol. :-D
