All I really want is reduced volume when I plug a headset in, it isn't that difficult. Although independent volume controls are a step forward, they still don't make up for the context sensitive volume control of the Symbian phones.

I think it looks good but unfortunately the spat between Google and Microsoft over active sync, and Google refusing to create a native WP8 app has forced me to stick to Android as Google is the Mail provider for my work email. I now have a Nokia 620 gathering dust.

you dont need an app for this, you can configure your built-in phone email with pop3/smtp gmail settings and you are good to go, sure an app would be better and easier but still you have a choice here.

I thought my youngest kid had managed to do it for her HTC 8S (she moved from a Samsung Android device), unfortunately I can't ask her at the moment. I think she may have followed the instructions here.

Just checked the WP8 store and there's an app called "Gmail 2014" that seems to get high praise - I wonder if this is the port of the iOS code that I saw mentioned in a forum posting some time ago. Oh, and there's a paid-for version that claims to be ad-free, although judging by the scarcity of comments this looks like a recent innovation.

The other thing is that I came across was this article at WPCentral talking about the MetroMail app for doing gMail on WP8 - even if the (paid!) app isn't of interest, take a look at the comments section - sure there's a lot of dross about gMail v's Outlook.com addresses, but there's some tips on how to get access without the MM app.

IMAP/POP do not push notifications on new emails.

Unfortunately the first one is IMAP/POP which is pants from my experience so far. The MetroMail one looks promising, but not enough to convince me its better than the native experience in Android. Windows phone now only makes sense if you have Exchange as far as I'm concerned. Couldn't see anything in the comments that was help change this really.

I'm kinda disappointed it's taken this long to roll out a feature that lacks any real innovation.

The driving option looks interesting. Hopefully it will allow you to one button customise stuff, like wifi, bluetooth and voice commands when locked.

Might want to change that if push email and syncing in general is vital. Otherwise I've had no issues with the standard IMAP client.

Now all I need is someone to stick it on a phone with a physical Qwerty keyboard.

No? Looks like I'm hoping the BB Q5 is still around come August then...!

Funnily enough eldest kid was a physical keyboard fan too - then she discovered SwiftKey. That, and the woeful selection if you just gotta have one of those grain-of-rice keyboards persuaded her otherwise.

Interesting comment in the article that the notifications centre seems to be patterned on the one in Android. Personally speaking I've got zero issue with that if it's the best way to do things. To get a bit ranty it really, really hacks me off when others are prohibited by legal means from using the most obvious UI designs (cough, cough, ... Apple?)

Said it once, and I'll say it again - although I'm a self-confessed Android fan, I can easily see the appeal of Windows Phone 8.x. The only issue I have with it is that software updates seem to be very, very slow to apply - but maybe that's a function of the lower powered WP8 hardware that I've seen in use.
