"aware of requests for Windows 7 support with DirectX 12 but didn't commit to delivering it"

I suppose that is all dependent on how the land lies Christmas 2015 with regards to what OS the majority are on.

So this looks like a similar thing to what Mantle is doing? Guessing there will be larger gains on the AMD CPU platform again due to single threaded performance being poorer.

Yup, the difference being this will work with any GPU....so nVidia and Intel also get the benefit.

Indeed! Hopefully it will scale well with lots of threads (e.g. 16 for the future Intel chip). I was trying to suggest that soon Mantle won't be necessary unless it is a much better implementation, although Linux would still get the benefits from Mantle.

Re: News - Microsoft introduces DirectX 12 at GDC 2014

Assuming I'm reading the details on those screenshots right, DX12 reduces the primary thread CPU time per frame from > 5ms to < 1ms. Regardless of actual framerates, that kind of reduction in single-thread dependence should pretty much eliminate any noticable difference between AMD and Intel in gaming terms. Shame it's going to take the best part of 2 years to roll out.

I guess where DX12 will actually have most impact is in the mobile space - we're already getting high-core-count low-clocking CPUs dominating (multicore ARM, Intel iX CULV, quad-core Atoms and Kabini/Temash) and paired with a DX12-capable GPU removing the single-thread performance dependence, they should become much more viable gaming platforms.

Not sure where all this leaves Mantle though: will it end up just being a stop gap to see AMD's CPUs/APUs remain relevant until DX12 lands? Will it become the goto API for Linux? Or does OpenGL already provide the multi-threaded scaling that AMD so desperately want? *shrug* The times they are a-changing, I guess...

and this unfortunately will be based on the majority of ALL pc's, not taking into consideration how many actual gamer's run Windows 8. So we will probably loose.

Also the direction Microsoft are taking, they are starting to enjoy pushing there products onto there customers. So without a doubt we will all need to upgrade to Windows 8 to benefit.

More likely, whichever version of Windows MS are trying to inflict on us at the time, probably 9 I guess.

Re: News - Microsoft introduces DirectX 12 at GDC 2014

Well i thought first DirectX 12 is not possible for DX11 gpus but surprised to learn that both Nvidia and Radeon can support DX12 and most importantly
AMD said that all its Radeon GPUs which feature the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture will support DirectX 12. Not surprisingly AMD has also been working with Microsoft in developing the new Direct X API.

Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, Graphics Business Unit, AMD, said that "With the Mantle API, AMD has shown the world our commitment to incredible performance, and we look forward to enabling the same performance gains by supporting the industry-standard DirectX 12."
So future for PC gaming is finally.

Does that mean we may be able to get Forza (or any other XBone game) runnin natively under Windows?

"It works across all the Microsoft devices you care about."

I'd much rather have it work across all the Microsoft Windows versions I care about.

Also, isn't it funny how suddenly nVidia and Microsoft have apparently worked on DX12 for the last four years. Just as AMD presents Mantle to the world? Coinkidinks are hilarious.

Re: News - Microsoft introduces DirectX 12 at GDC 2014

"demonstrated this performance lift with a Forza 5 tech demo on PCs" *hint* hint*?
If microsoft/turn 10 would release Forza 5 on PC I would buy it in a heartbeat. I had considered getting an Xbone just for the sake of having Forza but seeing as it doesn't support my G27 anyway and I like the PS4 controllers and user interface a LOT more I just put that idea to bed.

I really do love my racing games but the offerings they have on PC are just not of the same caliber as GT or Forza. Sure they have project cars coming out soon and it looks very nice but I noticed you don't see any japanese cars in any of the trailers/gameplay videos which is what about 80% of my car garage consists of in most games.

If Gran Turismo 7 turns out to be as good as Forza 5 or better then I'll probably buy a PS4. If I had the money I would just buy both, but then again... with the amount of money it would cost to buy both consoles here in New Zealand I could get a second 780 for my PC and run BF4 ultra on my 3 screens as well as have a bit left over for something else yeah... knowing me I'd probably go with that option lol.
