Re: News - Newegg pilot program starts in the UK and Australia

Had a quick look, with the shipping and import taxes, there wasn't anything that I wanted that came in below PC world prices.

Just offering "international shipping" isn't the same as having a proper UK presence. Hopefully they'll take the plunge.

Get a feeling that this will be a flash in the pan - prices set high so no one will order so they can then go and cancel the idea and report to the board that it isn't worth running due to no / low sales numbers....

A business going global must consider how they can compete with such well established companies like amazon, ebuyer etc. The way newegg approach this is all wrong and it seems to be more of a marketing device to gain traction on investors. Surely somebody in Newegg knows that it is completely not viable to do business this way especially given the already strong and establish incumbent competition.

With prices like that they won't last long against the likes of Scan, Aria, Dabs etc and even Curry's/PC World have become more competitive recently

Re: News - Newegg pilot program starts in the UK and Australia

Had a quick look, saw a monitor for a really good price (£100 less than UK prices) thought it must be without tax etc, but even with them would still be cheaper.

However add international shipping into the equation as well and sadly not, I can't see this working at all, I presumed they would actually be doing stuff in the UK, rather than just changing their shipping options.

Good prices or not I won't be buying a thing from them, for the reason that I refuse to indirectly give money to the american war machine.

Re: News - Newegg pilot program starts in the UK and Australia

Won't be shopping with them, if you have to have the item sent from the US then what do we have to do for an rma, send it back to the US? I can't seem to find it mentioned anywhere...

Not to mention do we even have the same security we would purchasing from a UK company, Newegg is basically just acting as an importer of it's goods into the UK so I'm not sure our sales of goods act, distance selling regs etc cover them...

Not that it makes much difference, if they can't beat the price at pcworld it's hasn't got a chance against established UK online businesses

EDIT: just had a thought about warranties... unless the product warranties are worldwide we might not even get the warranty if it's purchased at newegg as it's still technically a US sale.

Only thing I use newegg for is their reviews as you get a good idea what a product would be like via the reviews section. In terms of buying I would stick to Scan, Amazon UK Thank you.
The tax is ridiculous surely they know this cant complete with UK e-tailers.

Re: News - Newegg pilot program starts in the UK and Australia

I can only think of two reasons for buying from an operation like this :-

    1) The item(s) are dramatically cheaper than UK-based retailers. And by that, I mean sufficiently so (after adding import duties and taxes, and shipping costs) that it's still so much cheaper that it negates the issues mention above about RMAs, legal rights, foreign jurisdictions, etc. For me, that means half price at the very most.

    2) Or, slightly more likely, it's the ONLY way to get a product I badly want, and for which I can find no acceptable locally-sourced alternative. While possible, that's not going to be a regular occurance.

I doubt US prices are going to be good enough for point 1, and point 2 instances will be very rare, if it ever happened at all.

In short, I doubt I'd ever need to use them, until/unless they open up a proper UK-based operation that's competitive, and I ain't holding my breath for that.

Re: News - Newegg pilot program starts in the UK and Australia

My next needed purchase (a 3TB HDD) is £15 more with the tax/duty and shipping. Worse, if it fails (hard drive, what are the chances, lol) then the shipping fee is non-refundable. So, negative saving plus extra hassle and cost when there are returns.

I think they can sleep fine, Charlie. ;-)

I thought the prices looked good but with shipping and tax added later these are no better than what we already have so probably not going to ever use them
