Could this be a product of a subscriber flood to get in before the price hike? I know I was contemplating subbing, and when I heard about a price increase and that current customers wouldn't be affected, I jumped on the cheaper price while it was still available.
I wonder how many other people did that?
I did the trial and cancelled. The washed out video quality and the lousy range of series on compared to the US, not the price, is what stopped me subscribing. Might be watchable on your phone, on a big screen, meh.
I think the bit rate scales with what your broadband can manage. If your provider is throttling Netflix traffic then the quality may well suck, for me it is very good. My daughter has discovered Dr Who, image on that is really crisp and the 5.1 surround is rather good too.
As for the price hike, it may have made some people jump in but I wonder if people considering dropping the service are locked in by having to sign back up at a higher price if they change their mind.
Lack of content is the key though. I watched everything that NowTV movies had to offer in the 1 month free trial. If I drain Netflix of stuff that interests me, then it goes.
I subbed couple months ago and get good quality streaming though my chromecast have got a fair bit of use from it so will continue until I have watched what interests me.
60 meg Virgin cable here. iPlayer HD is fine and my download speeds on just about everything are superb. Netflix sucked, both via the PC and the Tivo. It mostly wasn't grainy or jerky, just nasty nasty compressed washed out colours and blurry upscaled-looking scenes that put me off. That and all the stuff I couldn't (officially)watch because i'm in the UK.
I did the 'proxy' thing on the pc when I had netflix via media hint (it was free but has since gone pay monthly) and all I did was 'log in' in the UK once, store the password, then 'activated' media hint and was given the huge list of US shows instead. Streaming was no different for me (quality was fine on pc in browser) and never had any issue from netflix.... they're likely.. well he's paying so who cares if it's a proxy in the US.
As to legal... probably grey area.
