Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

I am currently moving house. Having viewed 100's of property I haven't once asked, nor been told about broadband speeds. And I certainly haven't seen a correlation in house price and broadband availability. Further more I work from home a fair amount so a reliable broadband speed is pretty important to me - and yet it's not even a factor in my choice.

My conclusion; that more expensive houses got broadband earlier - because those residence are considered wealthy enough to fork out for it. That installation maturity translates into faster speed today (very generally speaking) and hence there is a correlation between prices and speed. Otherwise it's tosh.

Actually, it's probably that property in sort after locations are closer to town centres and therefore have the infrastructure. Either way, I disagree with the study!

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

I turned down a house when I found out it had no fibre time frame at all, and Virgin (not that I want them) didn't offer a connection there. It was currently connected at around 3 meg.

As someone who works from home often, with some fairly large files, it was simply out of the question.

Would it sound good on a property ad?

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

I don't think I've ever considered broadband speed when it comes to properties.

There are enough things to worry about before that would become a deciding factor.

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

When I was looking for an apartment in Angel it was one of the main deciding factors, sadly even though I'm in zone one in central Angel broadband speeds here suffer really bad with most properties getting under 2Mbit, thankfuly I found somewhere that has both Virgin Media and BT Infinity available and got lucky enough to be put on an early trial run (the trial doesn't expire though I will always get these or faster speeds) of 200/30 so it was win all around.

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

Having moved recently, although I did check to see what speed I could expect (9Mbps via the standard phone line), it wouldn't have been a deciding factor in the purchase (or the price).

Having said this - I hope the study is true as we're going to get 1Gbps fibre next year in York so I reckon that should at least double the value of our house

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

I certainly checked when I moved last time. I doubt I would have accepted a house with less than 10Mb (I was spoilt on 14Mb ADSL in the last house). Thankfully new house had infinity made available the month we moved in so I was able to get 20~30Mb. The ASDL was only 4Mb which I consider unacceptable but knowing I could get infinity swung it for me.

    Isn't that massively irresponsible?

    Indeed, it factors into mine!

Hell when looking at buying a holiday / investment property, I even got a quote for sat broadband, and estimation on latency.

I suppose a 4G dongle could offer a solution in some areas.

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

Not really worried too much about it, with that I went from 6 to 9.5 mbits in my last move and will say that the 9.5 has been enough for me to resist paying more for fibre.

Re: News - Better broadband speeds boost property values by £ thousands

Living in Bristol (Horfield), but still stuck with ~2.4mbps ADSL... I wish I'd checked the broadband more thoroughly before moving in.
On the other hand, it's not sufficient to persuade me to move, even though it's only a rented property; my phone does just well enough overnight for major downloads like windows/steam updates - seen up to 32mbps over H+ on Three at 4am, although less than 1mbps is common during peak times.

I'm looking at moving house soon and if it can't at least get fiber, I'm discounting them. Spoilt by my current connection to Virgin Media.

It was as important as being connected to gas, water and electricity when we moved recently and we discounted one house because it only had a 2 mb broadband connection. On 100mbps virgin connection now and could never go back to adsl. In my view this is only going to become more and more important in the future

well my experience (mate who's bought 4 houses) the more expensive a house is does in no way shape or form determine whether its got fast internet or not.
theres some £400k houses that are stuck with 8mb adsl in the churchtown area. all the roads around the one they are on have got fibre, their road, nope and no plans to install it.
theres a couple of £1m houses in birkdale with no fibre aswell, and some liverpool/everton players live there. so they have the cash to get it, just BTs infrastructure has no plans for their road.

the £80k houses down crappy streets, full 100mb fibre installed.

higher house price does NOT guarantee fast broadband.
