I'm really impressed with this model, I'll be looking forward to the 8-bay variant.

I have the DS414. Went for it because of the dual NIC. This looks like a decent step up from it, supports visualisation too!

Very impressed with my Synology, after using a 'spare parts' server for years, the simplicity of them is great.

My old server is only on for about 1 hour per week now, to keep a backup of the Synology.

It is a large initial cost, especially when you compare it with the fantastic HP Microservers. Will take a few years to make back the power saving difference, I think mine uses about 15W idle. My old server is nearer 90W idle.

Visualisation? Don't you mean virtualisation - VMware, VirtualBox, KVM, et al? Last time I looked into Synology that was up there in the spec list (although in the end I chickened out and just bought a WD "appliance" - minimal setup).

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

    Yes, yes I do

Damned spellcheck. First I right clicked it, then changed it to American spelling with a z in it, then edited it back out. Should have ignored that pesky red line
