Still, yummy CPU, and up to 6GB of RAM makes it a proper DIY NAS replacement. Plex will run great on that.

If they are like the RS units, the trays have 3.5" and 2.5" mounting holes. The HCL for the DS1815+ also lists a lot of 2.5" SSDs. 6 bays for HDDs, 2 for SSD cache...can still get a lot of storage in there.....and 4 GBe to make the most of the SSD cache performance.

The price compared to similar units is awesome. Same price as the DUALCORE 8 bay QNAP (and I wouldn't touch QNAP with a bargepole after the issues I have had with rebuilds on them) and quite a bit cheaper then their quad core. Only a bit more expensive than the 5 bay Thecus...and half the price of their own 12 bay units.
