Don't really see this as an issue if I'm honest, they don't say it's a sony sensor... pretty much all major manufacturers of electronics have multiple sources of components, even Apple uses multiple memory and screen vendors for it's products.

Having said that you would have thought considering Sony's financial state they would have invested more into this area earlier (they're now focusing on components).

Could be a storm in a teacup. Depends if there is a performance difference.

I would be annoyed if I read reviews and saw pictures and made my decision on this one deciding factor only to find the performance is not quiet up to snuff.

But if it's just another feature of the phone as long as you get 95% of the advertised performance then that should be more than enough for the average user.

Photo quality is one of the main points people look at when comparing smartphones and a lot has been made of the Sony sensor in the S6 when compared to other phones.

I saw this yesterday and checked the comparisons, I actually find the Samsung versions better looking. They both seem just as sharp but the Samsung photo's seem to be more naturally lit and slightly brighter in most cases.

This is not an issue. The quality is marginal, and the Samsung sensor looks generally better.

This isn't a dirty, sneaky trick by Samsung, the article clearly states that Sony "is only able to meet about 50 percent of its supply demand right now,".

It's Sony's fault, not Samsung's.

Outdoor photos are comparable, but they would be with most high-end smartphones - overcast daylight photos are the ideal scenario for most cameras - what's the difference indoors, as that's where the differences will show up, and I'd hazard a guess that most smartphone snaps will be taken indoors.

More things change the more they stay the same, my Samsung telly i bought over 5 years ago shipped with more then 3 different panel variations made by different company's.

Optics limit smartphone snappers these days far more than sensors. As long as the tune of the optics is the same for both sensors (sensor size / pixel density is the same) then it would be hard to tell the difference.

If anything blame the reviewers and there samples for stating it's a sony sensor. I wonder how many of the reviewers actually checked the model of the sensor for all we know some of the review samples had the samsung sensor in it.

Sony has a habit of using old stock on there phones, the Z1 was quite infamous for screen manufacturers in it's early days where one of the 3 manufacturers they used had a much lower viewing angle than the rest. You could tell from the serial number of the phone as to which screen it had.

Both sensors provide excellent quality images and are very close in performance. They've never claimed to only use Sony sensors anyway.

Just a grammar quibble - the author should have used the word equipped rather than quipped in the following sentence -

At the launch of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Samsung didn't specify the brand/type of the main camera sensor quipped in this pair of flagship smartphones.

One word indicates something is accompanied by or with something, and the other indicates the past tense of making a witty or humorous statement.

On topic - want to take good photographs? Use a camera. You're a lot less likely to have it stolen from the cloud that way...
