Re: Win one of 10 Y-cam HomeMonitor HD cameras

A camera that records what goes on in my own home, and uploads the video to the cloud? Umm, thanks but no thanks. Not even in the name of security. I'll leave this one to others. I'm sure there'll be plenty who'll have no qualms, but I'm not one.

I was thinking it might wire up (for power) inside my car - if it's wireless I could keep an eye on the street at night and catch the people filling my skip up with their junk.

I do fear that in the not-so-distant future, answer B might also be valid. Maybe even C. Terrifying.

You could always just put it in a spot where it wouldn't affect your privacy but would also be useful.

It would affect my privacy anywhere in the house.

Appreciate the opportunity, but I too will pass.

One of the joys of being American - my home protection may be a bit more primitive, but they'll surely get the point across. If the dogs aren't convincing enough, the slide action of a 12guage shotgun should be more than enough to dissuade any further stupidity.

I love the answers. Will definitely connect to my dog.

No, it's not "anywhere in the house". You place it in the bedroom and it uploads any action to YouTube automatically.

So the dogs are playing with the shotgun while you're away from home?

It affects my privacy anywhere in the house, just in different ways and to different extents, whether it uploads to YT or not, and for this device, I assume 'not'.

No - that's a job for the wireless, solar operated alarm system, and the local sheriff's office, which is located less than a mile away. And not many people are willing to go wading through a couple of, at minimum, inquisitive bull mastiffs.

If you don't like the prospect of a camera or the cloud storage, then do not enter for it and let those interested have a slightly greater chance.
No need to get into the petty arguments over your preferred alternatives either.
If the security of "the cloud" is such an issue, then surely you can't trust hexus or facebook with ANY competition entries, nor perhaps even your email provider.

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure (as in positive) that both of us that declined both said thanks, but we'll pass.

As for lack of trust of the cloud, it's got nothing to do with that, and everything to do with lack of trust of web-enabled cameras - at least for me. Wasn't that long ago that there were links for sites that listed 50k plus web cams that were either not secured, or the built in security was so lax that they was no real effort needed to circumvent the built-in software.

And believe it or not, some of us live where there aren't hundreds of cameras on every street corner, and prefer to live in the same environment. Saracen, OTOH, is an extreme personal privacy advocate, and isn't afraid to say so, nor comment on some of what he feels are people/companies taking certain liberties with privacy that they aren't entitled to.

But you're welcome to the 1/10000th of a chance you get from me not entering.

Perhaps you missed the bit where I said "Umm, thanks but no thanks. Not even in the name of security. I'll leave this one to others. I'm sure there'll be plenty who'll have no qualms, but I'm not one.".
There are two reasons why. First is the potential for unauthorised access to camera feeds. This is FAR from unknown, as Guido quite correctly points out. Secondly, it is self-evident that there is greater risk to data uploaded to the cloud than data not uploaded. The risk might be small, but exists.

And if you can't see the difference in privacy terms of the information divulged in a HEXUS competition, and a 24/7 video stream of the inside of your home, you really need to think a bit harder. I have no trouble trusting HEXUS. But even then, they don't get any information about me that isn't a matter of public record, like electoral roll, and you don't even provide that unless you win. Video feeds aren't public record.

As for email, you trust email privacy? Really? I don't, which is why I don't use it much, and for anything sensitive, have been using encryption for 20+ years.

And finally, as for "petty arguments", I made a simple statement that this is not for me. There would have been no further comment had people not chosen to pick up on that and comment on my comment. Including you.

In our case - the fence and the Beware of Dog signs backed up by my 85 lb puppy seem to keep people off the property. He is friendly yet protective and has a loud pronounced bark which he couples with huge white teeth and his hair standing on end. It sorta makes people think twice about bothering us. - Every once in awhile the traveling sales people ( or the traveling religious groups) come around but they never get into our yard

    Ah, then you're really covered.

Still, not everyone wants (or has the place for) big dogs or a nearby responsive police force.
