Re: Firefox 40 provides a 'fresh new look' for Windows 10

So they somehow made it look even more like Chrome than Australis did. I shifted over from Firefox to Chrome only like 2 months ago for 2 reasons, my main issues with Chrome have been fixed (horribly bookmarks reverted) and Firefox started having weird RAM usage issues causing it to stutter like mad, and the other was that Chrome, for all my issues with the UI, is faster. When Firefox adopted Chrome's UI it made sense that if I'm using the same UI either way, I may as well take the faster browser.

I still miss features from Firefox, like actual menus rather than chrome's in-tab settings windows, but on the whole with the way Firefox is headed I may as well just use chrome now. That said, I'm sure people still use Firefox for the extra privacy vs using chrome.

Just updated mine. I also think that this update would've slid by pretty much unnoticed if I let it auto update! Anyway, I really like the idea of the new addon signing! I just wish there was more detail for what the guidelines/requirements actually are. Does anyone know where I can see more detail on that?

Are these Add-on guidelines what you are looking for?

Re: Firefox 40 provides a 'fresh new look' for Windows 10

I can appreciate the certification/security aspect they've added for add ons but seriously they've spent time on 'design' for windows 10 (when they clearly haven't for any other version) when they could have been spending time on making the browser perform better by getting their multi core support finished for example.

They need to look at getting users back to firefox from chrome and even spartan (yes I know they did the default browser fix here too), most people left firefox because it was getting slow and bloated. I just think the mozilla dev's haven't got their priorities right.

    Classic Theme Restorer - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...themerestorer/

Puts it all back to how it was before the ludicrous Australis nonsense. And you can customise a whole lot more. Enjoy.

Oh nice, I wasn't aware there was a fully fledged addon like this yet. Last time I checked there were a few minor ones that didn't really change much and lacked proper customisation. I might have to give this a look if I can figure out why my Firefox was stuttering after being open a few hours.

Developers do have a problem, though. If they don't 'update' UI's, they can get awfully dated-looking. If they do, they get backlash.

I guess there's no right answer to that.

Personally, I've been using Theme Restorer for ages, since someone here I believe (you, maybe, Iranu) pointed it out to me after I updated FF, did a brief "what the bleep have they done to it" and .... ummmm .... vented a bit.

And, increasingly, I use Pale Moon too.

Same with Win8, of course, and my views on MUI aren't exactly secret round here, so I'll say no more.

But it does give dev's a bit of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't" dilemma.I guess the answer may be to incremental changes, not massive overhauls, and to be sensitive to user views, not try to shove it down their throats (yes, MS, I'm looking at you. And scowling.)

Agreed. The main issue I had with it was that it felt way too much like chrome, and I don't particularly like chrome's way of doing things.
I know when you complain about extra clicks it always gets retorted as whining about nothing, but I still much preferred having File etc along the top bar, rather than everything in Firefox, like Chrome, being buried under multiple levels of buttons.

I'll have to take a look at that addon soon, one of the things I miss most from Firefox is the separate search bar. It's incredibly useful for the way I browse, rather than chrome requiring me to create a new tab then type in the address bar. I've seen a few plugins for Chrome that try to imitate Firefox but none of them work amazingly well.

As a heads up, this is how you disable this. Go to about:config and change xpinstall.signatures.required to false (useful if you're like me and use the 64-bit version of Firefox and have to use addons that aren't necessarily compatible with that version but still work anyway).

Agreed, however they took a lot of things out that I used and I just could get it back to how I wanted to use it. Theme restorer was a life saver.

I heavily customise my FF to be the way I want it because I work much faster with the way I have it set up. It's the main reason I use it. Australis messed a lot of that up for me. I'm not a fan of this flat grey look that has infected many a UI. It may have been fine once for underpowered mobile devices, but I tend to use a lot of small icons so I like to have some definition to the icon and the menus because I find it easier to see things. Contrast and colour is good!

So is choice. People should have the choice to get the UI to look and feel how they want it. That goes for a lot of software. A lot of modern UIs drive me nuts.

I never liked the increasing switch to look like Chrome (or Chrome itself), the original layout with the proper menus is still perfectly fine for me. That's why I use Pale Moon instead.

    Indeed.

Someone needs to let MS in on the secret.

Other than a very big, very obnoxious drop to taskbar/minimize/exit block, I'm failing to see anything new, and nothing improved. Big hunk of white... Looks like it could have been done by Ed Sheeran's tattoo artist...

I never thought I'd say this about any MS product, but I'll be glad once Edge gets the Chrome extensions, so I can get rid of both FF and Chrome.

They've finally fixed the graphics/text corruption whenever Hardware Acceleration is enabled.
