Re: Google announces OnHub, "a different kind of router"

I usually just accept when Google release stuff that the price to pay is your privacy or browsing habits. But going full-on Saracen mode here - I'd never ever ever have my networking gear provided by Google, imagine how much lovely data they'd cream off that. Makes me feel uneasy..

    Does look nice, though.

Re: Google announces OnHub, "a different kind of router"

Yeah, I'm in Saracen mode here too, there isn't a chance in hell I'd let Google (or any 'data' focused company) have access to my router with the ability to update it to do whatever it wants when it automatically updates it's firmware .

Haha at the Saracen mode comments; I thought the same immediately.

I'm usually not too bothered about privacy stuff too but having every single website, cookie etc being given to Google?

    No thank you!

Saracen mode is in the urban dictionary - defined as a distinct fear of data and privacy to the point of being OCD

Oh and is it just me but isn't $199 a tad high for a data sucking Googlemonsterouter?

Surprised they haven't added a wifi sharing option,
like BT Wifi does, sharing 1Mb out as "free" wifi (as long as you log into google)

Re: Google announces OnHub, "a different kind of router"

Well I wasn't going to use the name Saracen Mode but I also feel the same, thats just asking to have your privacy taken away from you. However good the router is at eliminating interference, it isn't worth the cost to privacy.

I can't wait for the official Saracen response to this.

Meh, it's a rebrand of a router. It'll eventually come out minus Google printed all over it in one form or another. Just wait for it then.

In the mean time, the sensible people should still endeavour to use wired connections

Darn it, I can't even indulge in a good privacy rant without getting pipped to the post by newbies.

As for my view .... well, why bother, looks like you lot all know what I was going to say.

Oh, and Ferral? ..... tinfoil? TINFOIL??

At the very least, gold-lined aluminium, with built-in Faraday cage. Custom-fit, of course. And, silk-lined.

    Pah, amateurs.

Re: Google announces OnHub, "a different kind of router"

It's also interesting that Google has made a point of saying it's "a different kind of router" without in any way qualifying that statement. A big brotheresque router would be different, but it doesn't mean I want to pay £200 for it.
