These LGA motherboards are nearly 30 per cent smaller than the Mini-ITX standard.

Tbh, the laptop style ram slots will make custom, extremely thin builds easier.. however I'm also on the "Yay! Another standard..." team.

Should have said this in my first post but a board like this (DC power, int graphics) is EXACTLY what AMD APUs need.

Re: Intel launches LGA processor upgradeable 5x5 motherboards

hmmm... don't personally see a need for this
scenario a - I want a small pc with integrated gpu, I would get a nuc, there will likely be skylake versions of this soon enough.
scenario b - I want a small pc with dedicated gpu, I would go mitx

Why would I get the 5x5 which doesn't actually have any cases out yet either meaning I'd not gain anything over a mitx anyway.... seems kind of making a motherboard for no reason.

At the end of the day the 5x5 is basically a mitx with the pcie slot removed and laptop ram due to the 'forced' reduction in width.

Re: Intel launches LGA processor upgradeable 5x5 motherboards

If they could combine this with a thunderbolt 3 port, this would give the possibility of external gaming graphics.
Could be a good combo then.
Plus, it could use a few extra ports or at least an extra sata or internal usb header.
I have a NUC for light stuff and business, a M-ATX as a HTPC, and a huge gaming rig. Having trouble seeing why I would want a NUC board with only intel options. And still unable to mount the high end processors. Maybe with AMD processors to combine with the good onboard graphics.
But as it is at the moment, I am with the "Oh, not another standard".

Re: Intel launches LGA processor upgradeable 5x5 motherboards

I guess 5.5x5.8 just didn't have quite the same ring to it...

That aside, do we really need this standard? The dimensions aren't that far off compared to mini-ITX (which already feels cramped tbh), but I guess it's one of those "not invented here" things.

Also, cases. Who will build them and will they be any good? If they just repurpose mini-ITX cases then nothing is gained.

EDIT: I see LSG501 pretty much shares the same opinion as me.

2nd EDIT: This was my 300th post. Yay!

Makes sense to save a bit of space when there's no need for full sized DIMMs and an expansion slot..
