Re: UK Trident defence system could be rendered obsolete by hackers

That's odd, I thought they'd been rendered redundant in September 2001 when it became apparent that the biggest credible threat to our security was terrorist groups who operate across borders and thus aren't target-able by a nuclear strike.

Trident (and any successor,) is the security equivalent of very expensively insuring your car* against theft but not arson, despite the fact that no thefts have been likely since the early 90s but arson is a regular occurrence.

*In our case, being added to the USAs insurance policy would be a more accurate description.

And then as soon as the policy is lapsed the car gets stolen, but by then it's too late, particularly as it would take up to 25 years to rebuild a no claims bonus...

Not that anyone would still be around to rebuild a no claims bonus.

That aside this Lord Browne is full of it and has taken a report from 2013 totally out of context, for starters it's a report from 2013, it was commissioned by the US Department of Defense, and it was dealing with some people in the US defense community saying parts of their C&C system should be connected to the internet, something that anyone with a modicum of IT knowledge would know is a stupid idea.

Which is slightly ironic as the TCP/IP protocols were original developed to provide a resilient command and control network in the event of nuclear war!

Except the insurance doesn't get you your car back, it just ensures the thief hasn't got his car either.

We already spend more of GDP than most countries do in the world on foreign aid. Trident is a necessary evil that creates a stalemate because the end game is total destruction for everyone involved.

This news story is pretty laughable in the first place.

Wouldn't we all. However, while there are threats to our national security, money has to be spent on defence, which is one of the primary duties of Government, and that spending benefits everyone, including the less fortunate, who pay proportionately less through taxation.

And the defence sector issignificant employer in this country.

When you take everything into account and all the minor companies further down the scale it's probably the biggest sector.

I'll bet health dwarfs it - NHS budget is ~£100bn pa, while MOD gets ~£40bn. Private defence industry for export is all but non-existent, so the total won't be much more than the MOD chain and the NHS supports a fair few smaller companies as well

I would respectfully disagree that the less fortunate pay proportionately less, while it's true they have a lower tax burden the tax they do pay makes up a much larger proportion of their income.
