Re: AMD releases Radeon Crimson Edition 15.11.1 Update

I heard reports of burned cards because of the fan issue, but after testing with some friends we found out that it is really hard to burn the card, even if the fan get stuck in 20%.

The cards start throttling if they overheat and even shutdown to prevent damage, also this fan bug only show up if you have OC the card using 3rd party utilities, so if you have done that and called it a day (and losing framerates after some time didn't rang a bell) maybe you should stop OC your card...
OC is dangerous and you need to keep an eye on it, even if it is a low OC. You don't OC and let it be.

Apparently I already have these updates...was this a Win10 type scenario?
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

To be honest, I've always steered clear of OCing anyway, for the fractional difference it makes it hardly seems worth shortening the service life or even killing your hardware. One of the reasons why i am always shy of buying used graphics cards and CPUs off ebay etc... how do i know it hasn't been abused with overclocks and a reduced life-span?

I think even most of the 3rd party facilities still allow for throttling.

it is a beta driver that released 30/11, check the beta page http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-arti...dows-beta.aspx

throttling is a BIOS level thing so the apps can't mess with it, this is why I find it suspicious how many reports are floating around for burned cards.

YOU buy a slow card (~ $250) then you overclock it using a strange 3rd party software after that you expect it to run Witcher 3 at 70fps @ 4K resolutions.

No you don't. But I'm not sure how this is relevant?

Not everyone is using those programs to OC though. Lots of people just want to use a custom fan curve to get their GPU to be a bit more silent.

still tampering with the fan require to keep an eye open, at least they should start wondering why the card is slowing down.

Interestingly if listing old parts on ebay I will list the overclocks they have been running stable and what cooling was used.

As an overclocker I would others did the same.

As for shortening life, I still have a working Pentium 2 somewhere, if I could go back and overclock it knowing it would now be dead or closer to death I would do it.

For me I actually use more aggressive fan profiles to allow higher clocks, more noise doesn't bother me.

Just noticed that they've also update the 'final' beta driver for pre-GCN cards, so I guess this may affect them too. My 6870 hasn't been performing well (custom fan as the original seized) so this may be why!

I'd agree with that to some extent. However in some cases CPUs are graded after manufacture so those that don't meet the higher spec in all respects are given. Lower spec. That doesn't mean they won't perform at higher speeds, just that they may not be so stable. Increasing the voltage to improve that stability is stressing the semiconductor junctions and may have a detrimental effect on service life, although how much is difficult to say - unless you turn it up so far that you get catastrophic failure, and most o/c mobo arcs prevent you from doing that anyway.

But I'd agtee that the benefit obtained for the effort (and risk) doesn't seem worth it (for me) but if you like pushing the limits, then fair enough!

And if manufacturing improves, market demand will ensure they still keep up a supply of lower category chips even if the silicon is as good as the high end, in which case you're definitely OK bumping things to match the high end assuming other components are the same.
