Apple sell more devices than AMD sell cpu and gpus.
I guess their ultimate plan is to go 100% ARM only but the question is how long will they need to keep with legacy intel processors and how to transfer without pain.
Where is my 8 core arm chip with a small atom style x86 for legacy apps?
They'll have no choice but to completely re-kit that fab as the bulk of it's production is routed in last century.
Even 90nm was introduced in 2004 as a hot potato.
The cynic in me suggests they want to move designs in house because they have a habit of throwing patent lawsuits at their suppliers in the hope that some might stick. I doubt they get as much preferential treatment now as they used to
I WILL be happy when Apple works closely with AMD and ARM this means AMD will be more competitive and thus intel processors and APPLE products will get cheaper.
Good luck with that. Apple will always be more expensive than anything else. All that will happen is that the cost to them will be cheaper so they have more profit.
If they moved to ARM in their desktop/laptop range, I'd probably be forced to move to Linux/Windows. One of the main attractions for me is that I can do most of my work and desktop use in OSX, and boot into Windows if I want to play a game. I can also spin up a VM if there's a bit of software I can't get an OSX equivalent of (like Visio).
If you move to ARM, unless there's some sort of emulation layer, which would likely kill performance dead, there's no way to do either of the above.
It would be silly to move to ARM for desktop just as devs start porting games to OSX, it's a potentially large increase in sales for Apple.
I can't see devs bothering when they are doing XB1, PS4, Windows and Linux on x86.
