Hmmm. Interesting idea. Any downsides though? I thought Xeon's would be more optimised for server work (different caching algorithms etc) than gaming although I guess they've still got to be better than a regular i5?

Usually xeons on the desktop boards are the same as the i5/i7 with support for ecc memory and slightly different clockspeeds. Some come without a gpu which considering most users will add one makes no difference.

There may be limitations on things like overclocking, haswell ones 'can't' overclock but I'm not sure over skylake, if they can overclock I can see the logic in picking a xeon up.

You used to be able to use Haswell Xeons with consumer chipset motherboards like the Z97 chipset, but Intel stopped that with the recent Skylake Xeons, apparently. So you now have to use server chipset motherboards like the C232. Skylake Xeons like the E3-1245 V5 (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel...tio-80w-cpu-re) offer four cores / eight threads like the i7 6700, while costing only £20 or so more than the i5 6600. They aren't multiplyer unlocked though like K series chips, but might still be overclockable by increasing the bus speeds, and lack a GPU.

Thanks for the info. Figured there was more to a xeon than price and ECC support but apparently not. Wonder if I should be looking to replace my 3570k with a xeon to get 8 core performance then?

I have a 3570k myself, overclocked to 4.4Ghz. What do you use your PC for? If you're mostly gaming, I'd save your money for the moment, there really aren't many games out which can take advantage of 8 threads; given the lower clock frequency of the a Xeon like the E3-1245 V5, you might actually get slightly lower performance. If you're editing or transcoding video though, going from a 4 thread to an 8 thread cpu might make some sense.

I had a Xeon E3 1220 and now a Xeon E3 1230 V2 in my mini-ITX system for the last few years. Now that Intel have put a lock on how the Xeon CPUs are used, you might as well wait for a deal on the Core i7 6700 since the server grade motherboards will cost more I suspect!!!!

My 3570k is at stock (on stock cooler) currently. I bought it to overclock so might buy a decent cooler and do that in the new year. Its fine for 99% of my games - Its just starcitizen 2.0 that likes the extra cores but that seems to be getting better as they optimise it. Your probably right that its best to wait.

Overclocking your 3570K with a £20 after-market cooler will definitely be your cheapest upgrade for now. I've not played Star Citizen, but I'd expect that you're more likely to be GPU limited in it rather than CPU limited. If the CPU is the bottleneck, it does sound as it it's due to lack of optimisation. Bear in mind that Hyperthreaded 'cores' aren't equivalent to physical cores in most software, so the benefit of a four core / eight thread CPU might not be all that great.

Ahh. My bad. I knew some of the new i7 had 8 real cores and assumed the xeons where the same. If its 4 plus ht that isn't much of an improvement. Guess an OC is a good idea instead. Regarding starcitizen - I am CPU and GPU bound currently but my 580 gtx seems to be less of an issue than the CPU but its early days and threading is being improved.

I'm sure there are Xeons with 8 physical cores, but they'll cost a lot more than the £231 of the E3 1245 V5

Re: ASUS E3 Pro Gaming V5 is a Xeon motherboard aimed at gamers

I've been eagerly awaiting ASUS' follow-up to my P8C-WS and Xeon E3 1235 v2 combo, but this board isn't it. Sadly it's based on the stripped down C232 chipset and not the C236 chipset.

Oh, and as MrJim points out, there is no 8 core Xeon E3. That series is, for all intents and purposes, the same as a Core i7 with ECC enabled. Which is *exactly* what I'm looking for. The only Core i7 CPUs with more than 4 cores are the ones for socket 2011-3, btw.

EDIT: This Gigabyte MW31-SP0 looks a lot more interesting. Well, perhaps it doesn't *look* better per se, but the specifications are definitely a lot more interesting.

Yep. I'm so out of the game nowadays since becoming a dad. Use to know all this but I just assumed i7's had gone 8 core awhile ago. Thanks for the info.
