Microsoft got everything they need to be successful in smartphone tech like Legendary Brand name, Patents, Money, Technology, Market, people, etc. but still they miss something to capture the market as much as Apple and Google.
There are lot of initiatives that is being taken by Microsoft, perhaps they can learn things from the young Chinese companies like Xiaomi, OnePlus which gathered a huge fan base in a short period of time among the competition from Apple & Samsung.
Microsoft's Game Plan needs a change.

Microsoft's only issue is apps. Not just any apps - who cares if there are a billion apps like on iOS and Adroid, because the vast majority of the apps out there are complete and utter junk. No, they need to buck up and make sure, even if it means paying, that there are solid, regularly updated version of the apps for big sites - especially google stuff. I think they also need to do something to make sure this is THE mobile productivity device, by making sure everyone has office 2016 on the phone, for example, and they need the same kind of integration that google and apple have built into their phones. The big step backwards they took with cutting back on free One Drive space was *not* helpful in that regard. The biggest thing M$ has going for it is that it's on the vast majority of computers, world wide, first and formost through the office suite, but of course through it's OS as well. They need to do whatever it takes to make people think, "I've got a windows computer, of course I should get a windows phone," just like it seems to make sense for people with Macs to get an iPhone or iPad. It's sad that it's this painful of a process - Windows Mobile and it's hardware are pretty awesome, in and of themselves, but it's like getting a great engine and powertrain, dashboard, and safety features, but a crappy set of tires and seats and a makeshift odometer. Who's gonna buy that?
