Apple introduces a 9.7-inch iPad Pro tablet

Many might prefer it over the rather large 12.9-inch model from last year.

Stick Mac OS and a x86 chip in it and we might talk. It's completely pointless with just iOS on it.

I've always been slightly bemused as to who's buying these high-end tablets and what they're using them for (and the same sentiment goes for stuff like the Pixel-C from Google - I'm not picking on Apple).

I can almost see the point of the MS Surface if you tend to dock the thing - I mean my work laptop spends most of its life bound to a dock, with a proper keyboard, mouse, multiple monitors etc.
Maybe back 'in the day' when a tablet gave you the 'instant on' experience that was the preserve of silly-money laptops with SSD I could see the appeal.
Currently we have perfectly great cheap tablets (I love my nVidia shield to bits) for casually having to hand - but I'd have thought Apple should be bringing out a surface equivalent.
I've got a horrible feeling it's because most current Apple customers have never actually bought/used/needed the lovely OSX - and Apple is writing it off (I didn't see mention
iOS has been great for them so far - but simply racking up the prices and specs for the same hobbled-platform is a dead end. It's by no means a bad OS, but buggered if I've ever bought anything 'created' on an ipad.

It's a tablet with a touchscreen. iOS is designed for just that. OSX isn't.

Bit that went AWOL above, was that I've not seen mention of them upgrading the Mac Pro - their top of the line halo platform. It was expensive and a bit slow (but very very pretty) when it first came out, and has been left to rot since.

'designers' who believe that apple is the only choice to do design work (it's not but it's a stupidly 'popular' viewpoint) and rich people who just want the 'best apple product' because it's fashionable. I haven't actually seen anyone saying they own a pixel-c....

Unlike apple iOS the surface pro can run desktop class apps like photoshop/illustrator or even zbrush where the stylus works great, yeah iOS has their 'mobile versions' but they're never the same and often majorly restricted. As to who would buy one... I would if I had more use of it, I can see how I'd use it, literally the above programs I mentioned, I'm just not sure I'd use it enough to justify the £1500 or so I'd need to spend on it when I'd likely be using it at home where my main rig is.

To be fair there hasn't really been any major upgrades to the Xeon cpu's other than clockspeed/more cores but they come with higher prices. The main issue is likely down to the gpu because it uses their own non standardised socket which means a custom pcb design rather than taking a normal pcie one and slotting it in... All this to make it small as a trash can lol

I have a number of friends who work in art and deisgn who'd strongly disagree with you. A lot of them already primarily use an iPad and something like a Cintiq. When the original iPad Pro came out I asked them their opinion and it was mostly that it was a natural evolution of their existing workflow. Bringing out a version that is both more portable and $200 cheaper just measn they can address more people within that market...

    EDIT:

Also just noticed that the enhanced camera offers 720p video recording at 240 fps. I can see a few potential uses for that...!

And a cynic would argue that having OSX on it doesn't make it much more usable. If you've got Intel inside then why not go the whole hog and get Windows 10 on it? That, at least, is designed for a hybrid device.

I see a lot of iPads here, (not just the one I'm typing this message on) and while they don't replace a full laptop, you'd be surprised how much you can get done. Much as I hate to say it Microsoft Office apps on tablets are pretty darn good these days, and the iPad Pro also throws a whole lot of extras in there for the "creatives".

Heck, if Apple offered me a decent trade in for my Air 2 on the bigger Pro then I'd probably do it.

PS, I'm an Android fan, so I'll still argue that something like a Yoga 2 with a Logitech K400 (or similar) is ideal.

This is why I simply love mine.

Using it as a 'laptop' is always an in a pinch mode. I mean every laptop I've ever owned has had a sub-par keyboard, touchpard and display compared to what I've got on my desk at home and the office.

The surface is great because it's laptop experience, when you are in a pinch is OK, but put in a bluetooth keyboard and touchpad and it's far beyond any laptop I've ever used. All in still a lightweight, low bulk package. Throw in a second surface and you've got a sweet portable working area that is better than one laptop and comparable in bulk to say a MBP.

So even when you aren't just docking (hehe) it's quite good too. I have no issue driving two 34" widescreens from it.

Re: Apple introduces a 9.7-inch iPad Pro tablet

It seems that the 9.7-inch iPad Pro has half the memory of its bigger brother (2GB instead of 4GB of RAM) and its GPU and GPU are clocked slower. The Geekbench scores for the new 9.7-inch machine are 3022/5107 single/multi core. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro scores 3231/5482 respectively. Twitter source.

Does leave me wondering exactly what the point of the new device is, unless it's a "me too" up against the Surface Pro (against which I'd suggest it'd lose).

Then again, I did kind of wonder about the purpose of the iPad Mini.

Why is the 9.7" Pro listed as being a bit slower with graphics than the 12.9" Pro? After all, it has fewer pixels to push around. What did Apple do, clock it down?

Erm you might want to read mtysons post above (thanks Mark) where he says that cpu and gpu *have* been down clocked. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's because of smaller battery, or preserving the large Pro's position at the top of the iPad tree.
