It'll be pretty explosive if the PS 4.5 rumour is true. It could well alienate the roughly 40 million PS4 owners there are currently. This also could actually give Microsoft the green light they need to shift from trying to make the current XBox One platform to work (as stated above), to maybe a 4K/VR/AR Xbox One.
Lol, this rumour could actually stifle sales in both PS4 and XBox One simultaneously.. Perhaps only Uncharted 4 being the unique selling point for PS4 in the interim.

My PS4 has been turned on roughly 8x since it was bought at release. Never been so disappointed with a console. Well, to be more precises with the games. With the exception of the Witcher 3 there's been nothing to entice me that is not a rehash of something I already had on the PS3.
Even the PS3 does not get used now as I have a smart TV and no longer need it to stream from the PC.
Why would a PS4.5 alienate users?? They will most likely both play the same games,with the PS4.5 running them at better quality settings. It is like saying the PS4 launch alienated PS3 users LOL. If anything this will threaten PC gaming even more - with the PS4 most likely going down in price even more,and the PS4.5 having better visuals,I can see more not bothering with gaming PCs.

Even with PC gaming myself,since last summer I can only really count 4 PC games I really bothered playing:
1.)Fallout 4
2.)The new Tombraider
3.)Heroes of the Storm
4.)Planetside 2
Three of those four games are on the PS4.
To a degree, it will undermine the current console model, which a lot of ps4 buyers have bought into. It will cast doubt in the current potential buyer's mind also and might make them sit tight for holiday season if they not in a rush etc.Originally Posted by CAT-THE-FIFTH
With 14nm arriving on consoles at some point, some kind hardware refresh was to be expected though.

I doubt it,since the PS4 will drop in price further,which might mean more sales. We used to have these sorts of things happen in the 80s and 90s and consoles still sold well,ie,things like add-ons for the Sega and Nintendo consoles.
Also,being essentially PC hardware,I suspect the PS4.5 might the console win AMD is talking about,so it would not surprise me if it has a higher clocked version of the current CPU in the PS4 with a something based on Tonga,ie, a jump from 1152 to 1792 shaders,with support for certain things like fine grained pre-emption and so on. That would be easily a 50% to 60% increase in GPU performance there.
The current PS4 VR setup seems to run reasonably well,but with a bumped up spec on the GPU side with the PS4.5,I suspect the OR and Rift are going to look quite overpriced as a whole system now.
Plus it would simply mean the PS4 will run the same games at a lower resolution and low details - no different to the PS3 versions of the same games on the PS4,with the PS3 being sold as the budget option when the PS4 was first released.

I think both sides have been watching phone development. People buy phones that cost more than consoles. Then within 2 years they buy a replacement phone that costs again more than a console just for the newer tech. Both phones run the same games and flavour of OS.
The PS4.5 version could have the PSVR accelerator unit/box integrated and maybe a 4K blu ray drive thrown in too.. Just a thought, as it is all pretty speculative at the moment.
reminds me of the n64 expansion pack. I wish they made something that simple to upgrade
I think that psychologically there is a difference between introducing an add on to upgrade an existing console that you own, and releasing an upgdated console altogether. That said, on the handheld side of things updates are not uncommon on the handheld side of things (e.g. Game Boy Advance -> Gameboy SP -> Updated Gameboy SP; PSP 1000 -> PSP 2000 -> PSP 3000).
But it is also true that we rarely see major performance upgrade in recent home console AFAIK. Efforts have usually focussed toward making the unit slimmer and perhaps cooler to run so early adopters never have to feel left out.
Overall, I don't really think there will be a major backslash. But knowing that the cycle (as far as performance is concerned) is no longer restricted to 6 years may well play into people's mind when they decide to release the PS5.

I bet the 4.5 will be a Upgrade for ur PS4 rather then a new consol something simular to how laptops can link ur desktop GPUs
