I guess with WW1's slow rate-of-fire, now is the best time to add ammo as a micro-transaction!

I miss the days when games earned their money only from how many they sold and weren't used as stores to sell you things.

Hmmmm. Not sure about this as a concept.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

I'm absolutely certain about it. And I agree with Phage.

I'm hesitant enough about macro, and for me, micro is an absolute non-starter.

I want to be able to look at and maybe even 'demo' a game, and make a decision based on a known cost. If I buy this, it's going to cost me £x. And only £x. And I can get the complete, pre-canned experience for £x.

I want it a bit like buying a movie on DVD. Once I've bought it, I can play it once or 1000 times, over the next 20 years or more if I want, without having to dip into my pocket for "extra" dialog or plot details.

I do get why "pay to play" appeals to some people, but not to me, and as the article suggests, this micro approach just blurs the line.

That said, it's EA and unless they've changed tack to their copy protection, DRM, online authentication, etc, I wouldn't buy EA products anyway.

Re: EA touts Battlefield 1 micro-monetization opportunities

If it ends up being like paintballing where you have to pay £5 per 100 rounds I'll be pissed lol

Actually, as long as the approach they take doesn't unbalance the game for those that steer clear of the additional transactions, I don't much care what they do.
As long as I can buy the game and its true DLC (ie maps/modes) in much the way I did with BF3 & BF4, I will accept that. At 800hrs play I have more than had my moneys worth from BF3.

Surely by purchasing the game you have already paid to play. Sad state of affairs really, an amazing reveal by DICE and EA have to muddy the waters with this.

Would be good to see a games earnings from this all split out to see how much it makes them.

Re: EA touts Battlefield 1 micro-monetization opportunities

pmsl... EA and 'and turning a game "into a pay-to-win experience," is closely considered.'

Yep it will be carefully considered alright, you will HAVE TO PAY TO WIN, it's happened in pretty much all of their other games where they've said this to the best of my knowledge.

Having been burned on an EA 'micro transaction' based game where you could basically only win if you bought extra items I'm not going to bother with that type of game again. If I can't play it completely without spending even more money on the game (they're not exactly cheap these days) then I'm not likely to even bother playing it.

I have no objection to 'styling items' being paid for but they should not make anything that impacts the game play paid for in my view.

Re: EA touts Battlefield 1 micro-monetization opportunities

It upsets me to say this but really this is just EA logging on and seeing the most successful BF192 mods and slowly turning them into full games. Everything in this game is a complete rip of the BF1918 mod (which is very good) and I suspect not a single thought has been cast onto the original modding community.

I am sure by micro-transactions, EA mean something along the lines of ... if you come across an enemy tank, you can use your handgun to keep shooting for a whole day and eventually blow it up or you can buy a RPG for £5.99 and blow up the tank in one shot!

Ye agreed, Expansion packs I never had a problem with, but its starting to get to the point where you pay a pretty singificant amount of money for even just 3 maps or something. That alone bothers me, and I only buy Season Passes or DLC on discount if at all, but microtransactions I just refuse to use.

I'm sure they'll "closely consider" it, but we already know EA's perspective of what is and isn't acceptable is a long shot away from that of the average consumer.

So long as I can play it fully without having to pay for these "micro-transactions", I'm not too fussed. I'd rather use time as my method of unlocking guns and accessories.

Re: EA touts Battlefield 1 micro-monetization opportunities

Well it already looks like the preorder bonus' are pretty powerful items, they are going to try and sell in game things with micro transactions and its definitely going to have DLC.... Honestly it will depend on reviews and how the various money grabs are implemented, but if it goes the way I think it will.... Nope... Not supporting it.

Battlefield series has been stripped out of soul and fun since Battlefield Bad Company 2....All it is now is just a money making creation for shareholders.
