AMD Zen motherboard chipset design issue may add to costs

Report says that Zen chipset design requires extra retimer & redriver chips for USB 3.1.

$2-5 extra for a motherboard - that's not going to break the bank.
More interesting IMHO is that the chipsets aren't going into mass production until Q4 '16. Zen can't release without chipsets (and hence motherboards) so it's unlikely we'll see it this year but possibly late Q4.

Re: AMD Zen motherboard chipset design issue may add to costs

I'll be super surprised if Zen ships in 2016. I bet my lunch it will be delayed until Q1 or Q2 2017. I'm holding out to replace my FX8350 rig with a Summit Ridge system, but I won't be holding my breath.

Well if the chipset has passed certification then the issue is minor. Elsewhere there was a suggestion is was only a problem with extra-long USB C cables.

"ASMedia asserted that the USB 3.1 issues were just a market rumour while in fact its chipset's signal, stability and compatibility have all passed certification."

more rumour reporting, Hex? Is this what you regard news to be?

Both AMD and Intel have said their new chips will be Jan 2017 to allow stock inventories to pass.

Re: AMD Zen motherboard chipset design issue may add to costs

Commentators on other massage boards have pointed out that this circuit distance issue also effects Z170 boards (because it's inherent to the nature of USB3.1 controllers..)

Honestly, this is complete non-news, not sure what Digitimes is trying to accomplish dragging AMD down like this but more disappointed that it's been regurgitated wholesale by yourselves.

Re: AMD Zen motherboard chipset design issue may add to costs

Another legit (or so I thought?) site reporting rumors and FUD. Like others above have pointed out, it even says so in the article (that it's a rumor).

It's AMD. I guess integrity and professionalism go out the window when it comes to reporting about them.

A few months ago we heard how using 1.5v DDR3 modules could damage an intel skylake memory controller... am yet to hear which has damaged.

Re: AMD Zen motherboard chipset design issue may add to costs

What I find worrying is what this bodes for Bristol Ridge AM4. If 'Zen chipsets' will only be available with Zen, then I can see only two scenarios: Bristol Ridge AM4 will only be available with Zen, or Bristol Ridge AM4 motherboards will not support Zen. Either one is bad in my book.

Bristol ridge will go the way of carrizo on desktop! AMD have given up on their old core design!

My question is, why is this unique to zen boards?

TBF,they do post rumours concerning other companies too,and the sources are always linked back to, so the reader can make their mind up. They are not the only site to do so though and its a bit like shooting the messenger, since they are only reporting what others have mentioned.
