"athletes"

What's wrong with calling them athletes? Do you even know that the word means?

I'm fairly sure I know what the word means. I personally don't think it's particularly relevant to people playing computer games at a professional level. In what way are they "athletic"? I'm not saying they aren't very good at what they do, but just being very good at something doesn't qualify you as athletic.

The origin doesn't really matter, it's different to the modern meaning. It's like saying I'm an actual ape because of the way humans evolved. I'm not (honest!).
We had a charity thing in the office a few weeks ago - guess the number of [popular sweets] in a jar, closest without going over wins. The winner got a voucher of some sort. I entered. I took a reasoned guess at the total along with 50 other people. Are we all athletes?
You say we are, I say we're all lumpy pale office workers who get out of breath thinking about the walk to the lunch van.
How are they not?
Just because its not physical?
A lot of pro gamers spend 8 - 10 hours a day, 7 days a week practicing / training so they can be at their best for the time the tournament comes around and a lot of them earn very good money from it to boot.
Darts players could be classed as athletes in their own right too.
FYI - America also offers visa's for eSports Athletes...
So people are THAT enthused by the actual mouse itself, huh?
