I think this is one case where that doesn't really apply.

I expect that this is the already existing Freesync over HDMI but adopted as an open and free standard.

Becoming the adopted standard did absolutely no good whatsoever in unifying the DisplayPort market as Nvidia still refuse to use it. I presume there is some stupid contract shenanigans going on there as well as there can surely be nothing technical from stopping a monitor manufacturer from making a monitor with two DP inputs where only one of them has G-Sync on it, so the other would give Freesync. I expect many people would happily pay the G-sync tax if they get to keep flexibility on using AMD (and at some point Intel) VRR on the other port.

In fact given that Freesync is free and a second DP connector can't be that expensive, I expect if allowed then very rapidly all G-Sync monitors would become dual standard. Couldn't have that now could we

But, consoles are all AMD based so presumably can support this already, so TV adoption can be expected to happen. Nvidia don't have an HDMI standard for VRR and are now very late to the party. On top of that HDMI monitors tend to be low end making the cost of the Nvidia module a non starter. So Nvidia just have to adopt this, right? Hmm, I wouldn't count on it, but really hope they do.

Nothing's changed, in as much as they've had that excuse for years. In fact they had much more of an excuse in the days of RGB SCART when cable quality made a readily visible difference.

End of day it's up to the consumer to be educated enough to tell the difference between worthwhile investment and sales bull.
